Last year's overnight superstars The Knack have just issued their second album . But The Little Girls Understand (Capitol). As on their first effort, The Knack draw from both the British invasion days of rock and roll, as well as early Los Angeles Folk-rock This time, though. the songwriting is more consistent and the performances are all exuberant, which should please their many fans The Knack arc certainly an entertaining lot, and they're going to be around fora longtime. On Kobcrt Gordon's fourth album. Bad Boy (RCA), he tackles more forgotten rockabilly gems from the past Robert Gordon isn't (he most original of rockabilly's new breed, nor is he the most exciting, but there's no doubt that he’s sincere and tries hard to please his audience. He probably won't break out of cult status this time, but Rad Roy is a highly enjoyable long-player that should please any rockabilly fan. LIKE MOST of Ray Charles' recent releases. Ain't It So (Atlantic) is an uneven record. His voice is still rich and soulful, but the arrangements and material often drag the performances down One moment he can be brilliant (Drift Away), only to be
mediocre the next (One Of These Days) His most ardent fans will want this to fill out their collections, but few new fans will be won over. Ray Charles has some greal albums in him. and one can only hope they're made before tco long It's called Ska. and it's an early more pop version of Jamaica's rcggie music. Exlremely popular in England in the midsixties. it, along with soul, and the pop sounds of The Who and The Kinks, served as dance music for the mod movement. On our shores. Ska never made much of an impact RIGHT NOW, In. England, there's a major Ska revival, and two of the genre's most successful artists have Issued debut albums in (he States. Surprisingly enough, both are racing up the charts. The Specials (Chrysalis) and Madness' One Step Beyond (Sire) arc fine records that are filled with the .subtle, yet driving reggae rhythms, tough soul organ, humorour lyrics, and a rawness which might throw off American dancers who are used to a lush dLsco drone Although this music evolved into raggae, there's a strong influence of American R&B throughout Maybe Ska will, at long last, find an audience in America
