Walkout Delays Budget Vote

ERMA — The Lower Cape May Regional Board of Education unanimously adopted the district's *4.4 million budget last Thursday evening, but not before some unusual shuffling. Only five board members were present for the after10 p.m. vote on the budget, and all five voted to approve the measure, which is up over *400,000 and calls for some *3.4 myjion in taxes, also aboriT 10 per cent over the cur^nt fiscal measure. y» AMONG THOSE who missed the voting were board president James Washington of West Cape May. who had to leave early due to another commitment; and board members jiobdrt 'Conner and Robert Matthew’s Lower Township who walked out of the meeting following a disagreement. After the walkout, the hoard, whose full complement is nine members, was without a quorum and had to locate another member so the vote could be taken Finally, board member William Russell of the township was brought in and the vote taken. Man Held In Fatal Stabbing WILDWOOD - A 21-year-old man has been arrested following the fatal Friday evening stabbing of a 50-year-old woman in the lOOblock of W. Spicer Ave. According to reports, Jean Cheri Williams was found with multiple stab wounds on the bathroom floor of her home, and Mitchell D. Williams, no relation, was later charged with homicide. Authorities found the victim after a call to police shortly before 5:30 p.m. that a woman was bleeding. Williams was arrested at his Schellenger and New Jersey Ave. address, which is about three blocks from the crime scene. Fox Wants Check On Computers COURT HOUSE - Congressional candidates Beech Fox wants the General Accounting Office to determine if computers are being used by incumbent Congressman Bill Hughes for congressional purposes or as a campaign

tool.

"The original intent and purpose for use of computers was to collect data on legislation and advising constituents on same." Mr. Fox stated in a recent news release. "It is a widely known fact that lists of names complied by the computers are in many cases used as campaign tools in election years." According to the Republican challenger, few constituents realize that when they write to their congressman "in most cases they are being answered by a computer and that their name is kept in the computer bank for future mailings "I want information ’ gathered now to make sure these lists will not be used in re-election campaigns by our congressmen." Mr. Fox said.

MR, BONNER and Mr. Matthews left the meeting following complaints by other board members that Bonner’s requested detailed, line-by-line comparison of budget line items was taking too long and that the board had already gone over the budget item by item during meetings in January The Regional school district comprises Lower Township, Cape May and West Cape May (students from Cape May Point pay^ on a tuition basis), and the new budget reflects the final year of a revised formula whose effect will be an increase of some 6 per cent in the tax levy for Cape May City taxpayers. UNDER STATE formula. taxes in a regional school district are apportioned on the bases of Special Olympics Set in April ERMA - Patty Pironti, chairman of the Cape May County Special Olympic Committee, announces the Special Olympic Track & Field Meet for 1980 will be 10 to 3 April 26 at Lower Cape May Regional High

School.

The Lower Township Rotary Club is raising the money and helping to sponsor this year’s track and field meet. Anyone who hasn’t already signed up should contact the Special Olympics chairman at 8840378 or 5860.

ratables. In the Lower Cape May Regional District, the formula for years had been based on student enrollment from each of the constituent districts—a method that had been set up in order to "sell" the regional concept almost 20 years ago. (at a time when most students came from Cape May. Now thert are move from the township.) For the past several years, the ratable apportionment has been gradually brought on line. Earlier in the Feb. 28 special meeting, Steven Peckiconis, a member of the Cape May Board of Education, expressed his concern that the Regional board had changed its regular meeting nights from the third Thursday of the month to the second Thursday, the same night as the Cape May board meets. This makes it impossible for parents with students in both school districts to attend the meetings of both boards. The change in the Regional meeting night had been made during the reorganization meeting last year to accommodate the schedule of the new board solicitor. Topic: Volunteers COURT HOUSE - Betty Robinson, director of volunteers, with the regional office of the American Red Cross in Philadelphia, will be at the Methodist Social Hall 7:30 p.m. on March 10 to introduce new, previous and current volunteers to the need and use of volunteers.
