Budget Cut Irks C of C COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Board oi Directors have voted to call upon the N.J. Legislature Joint Appropriations Committee to recondiser the cut made to the Rutgers University budget request. The directors Feb. 21 cited the outstanding work done by various schools and colleges within the University structure, and in particular the Cook College of Agriculture. "N.J. is the ‘Garden State.' and agriculture is one of our prime assets. We lead the nation in many innovative and technical developments. in agriculture due to the experimental and scientific work and study provided by Cook College," said the Directors. In conclusion the directors noted that Cook Colleges' Experimental Station will celebrate its 100th anniversary on March 11“ "In 1880 when the center was started, one farmer was able to grow enough food for 6 people, now 100 years later, one farmer grows enough food for 70 people, and our country exports 30 billion tons of grain annually," the directors pointed out.

Clam Knife Legislation Advances TRENTON - The N.J. State Senate has passed a bill sponsored by Senator James Cafiero amending the existing law which limits the length of cutting bars on clam dredges to 60 Inches. The Cafiero amendment would require that the cutting bar conform to dimensions established by the Commissioner of Envirortmental Protection by regulation. According to Mr. Cafiero, in shore clam vessels arc now limited to 500 bushels per week. That limit has been imposed as a conservation measure to protect the species and to foster the rebuilding of clam beds. Since the vessels are limited to their total catch, the knive size should be immaterial in light of the catch limitation which already achieves the objectives of conservation, the senator said. "The removal of the knife limitation would improve the efficiency of each vessel without depleting the beds and, at the same time, promote fuel efficiency," Cafiero noted.
