Along §ith The Kinks, The Wh<, Bolling Stones, and Beach Boys. The Byrds were prime motivators in sparking my interest in music This Los Angeles band will truly eclectic. its music bore traces of folk, country, electronic, jazz, Indian. British, and rock and roll Thxught they hit the top of the charts numerous times with classics, such as Tamborlne Map. Turn TurA Turn, My Back Pages, and So You Want to
be a Hock and Boll Star, their decline ih popularity was long and painful When The Byrds finally called it quits, only one original member remained and only a few diehard fans mourned their passing LAST YEAR, three original members • Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, and Chris Hillman, • reunited, found a hit single, and were well on their way to returning to the masses. The new album by McGuinn Clark and
Hillman should be a big help in entering former fans back to the fold. City (Capitol) is a modern, urban ' record. Roger McGuinn’s 12 string guitar seemr to soar. The Records and Tom Petty have both been influenced by McGuinn s original style, but they can’t touch the master. The harmonies are warm, yet powerful, and the songwriting, especially One More Chance. Won’t Let You Down and Let Me Down Easy, is on par with anyone today. MCGUINN. CLARK AND Hillman have opted not to call themselves The Byrds. But, as this startling, adventurous album indicates. they ’re picking up where they left off over a decade ago, and The Byrds might be more fitting than just McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman Nevertheless, music of this calibre won’t stay unnoticed. The Searchers not only predated The Beatles as a recording act, but actually rivaled them at one point in popularity. Maybe better management and a record company with clout could have changed the course of history, but it really doesn’t matter. THE SEARCHERS never broke up, although they were without a contract for five years, and Tlfc Beatles are. unfortunately, a thing of the past. I’m glad The Searchers had enough faith in their music, as their debut album for Sire Records is their finest long-player in their 20 year recording career. This isn’t a nostalgic outing, as The Searchers’ sound is crisp, basic, and very contemporary. They’re still combining the harmonies of merseybeat with the jangling guitar of folk-rock, but the sound is fuller and more intense. Vocally, The Searchers easily show why they were one of the leaders in the British rock invasion. It may sound a little crazy with the exquisite music being made by young bands - such as The Jam, The Pretenders, Tom Petty, and Blondie - but McGuinn. Clark, and Hillman and The Searchers could, with a few lucky breaks, be leaders in the rock field in the eighties.
