Seagull Classic Signs Crusaders

ATLANTIC CITY - Three national scholastic champions have joined the field of Seagull Classic VII, a holiday court tournament lo be held in this area next December which will also include Wildwood Catholic. According to tournament director, Fr. Ed Lyons. DeMatha High School of Hyattsville, Md.. Verbum Dei High School of Los Angeles. and West Philadelphia High School have returned contracts to participate in the schoolboy tourney. Atlantic City will also compete along with Wildwood Catholic in the eight-team boys competition. FATHER LYONS said a six team girls match-up is also being organized, and championship caliber teams are being sought. DeMatha, a perennial power, was national champion in 1978. The Maryland school is coached by Morgan Wooten, the winningest scholastic basketball coach in the country whose overall record at DeMatha is 625-87. Verbum Dei High School wasjudged best in the country in 1974. Like DeMatha, the West Coast school is consistently among the nation’s top teams Verbum Dei captured the 1979 Southern California championship with a 27-2 record. They are currently 22-2. WEST PHILADELPHIA was led to national prominence by coach Joey Goldenberg and Gene Banks in the 1974 Seagull games. The two led West Philadelphia to three Successive city titles and a national championship in 1977. West Philly will be
making its third Seagull appearance. Wildwood Catholic plays in the Cape Atlantic league and was a South Jersey favorite to take the state parochial "B” crown. The Crusaders, a team of underclassmen.'lost in the semi-finals, hbwever, and ended up the season 21-4. Atlantic t City High School, another national court poweffis currently ranked No. %in New Jersey. and will'be making its third Seagull appearance. ALLEN PERGAMENT, co-director of the Classic, noted that the Seagull will be back in tourney play after two years of sponsoring regional All-Star games. "We’ve been building up for a super comeback, and I think we’re well on the way,’’ said Pergament. "I don’t know of any other tournament, holiday or postseason. that will bring together the powerful teams we have for this competition." Three slots remain to be filled on the boys slate with a New York team a likely choice for one of them. Among the girls teams, Atlantic City, tops in Jersey, and Holy Spirit, host school, are two of six picked so far. B ball Sat. ERMA — The Kiwanis Club of Cape May will tap off its first Annual Basketball Invitational for seventh and ei^fn graders 10 a m. MarchTOat Lower Cape May Regumal High School. The nhals will begin7p.m. March 17. Six area teams will vie for first, second and third place team trophies with the winners earning individual awards as well. In addition, one player will be chosen from the field as the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The teams are from Cape May, St. Ann’s of Wildwood, Assumption of Wildwood Crest, Avalon, Egg Harbor Township and
Ventnor.

WILDWOOD - The 21st Annual Championship Tournament of the TriCounty Women’s Bowling Association took place at the Wildwood Bowl March 1-9, giving many of thf association’s 5,000 members an opportunity to play at one of South Jersey’s newest bowling lanes. Association president Paula Carroll explained
the tournament gave two full weekends of tournament play, with champions to receive their awards during an April 20 luncheon Atlantic City. The Tri-County Women’s Bowling Association is made up of bowling females from Atlantic, Cumberland and Cape May Counties. ./
