It’s not true — the rumor that the Old Sport has been fired as a sports writer for this paper. Granted there hasn ? t been a column for three weeks, but the reason is that he hasn’t been meeting deadlines due to the pressure of other business. A few of his readers were sure that he had been fired because of his controversial columns. One friend even said that he was like that gadget in a washing machine, an agitator. But the fact is that he writes things the way he secs them and spares nobody’s feelings. THANKS ARE due a number of local sports I THE ! 1 LOBSTER I HOUSE | FISH | | MARKET |

experts who have helped in his coverage of local sports. Keith Seaman has shared his expert knowledge and vast experience in playing softball to become a valuable source of information... COACH RAY BATZ has left his position as Guidance Director at Middle Township High to take a job at his alma mater. Grove City (Pa.) College as assistant director of admissions. His departure leaves a large void in the Soccer Program in Middle Township. HE WILL also be missed as civic leader since he was the original force behind the establishment of a Recreation Department in the township. Good luck in your new endeavor, Ray, and we’ll really miss you around here. Mike McLaughlin also deserves thanks for his help in the Volleyball field. He is always willing to sit down and talk sports with the Old Sport, He expects to field a Girls Softball Team in Court House this season. GENE SANDERS deserves credit for helping the Old Sport get a Flag Football Program for boys started here. He supplied copies of the rules and donated flag belts from his adult team. A perennial athlete. Gene can play flag football, basketball, volleyball and softball among the team sports, and is also a tennis enthusiast. Chuck Mcllvain has rendered valuable assistance to the Old Sport also. Besides playing softball, Chuck has a large fund of anecdotes about past sporting events in the area. He also plays golf. HARRY BACK has promised information on Dart Shooting, and this indoor sport will be described in succeeding issues. Softball-season will soon be here and the players are already talking about the coming season. There has been some reshuffling of teams and players in the County Softball League.

Parkway Exxon will sponsor the Court House Team and Harry Back and Keith Seaman are rounding up players. WE CAN almost say good-by to the basketball season for now. The Panther boys team lost a heart-breaker to Gateway Regional in their first round play of the State Tournament. Coach Chick Ludman did a fine job in his rebuilding season and now just wait until next yearf With Derek Williams. Kevin Jaudon, Dawson Spaulding. Doug Fulford, Frank Brown and Jeff Tanner returning, Middle should be in the thick of the battle for the CAL championship. It was certainly a rebuilding year and he has made use of two freshmen. Doug Fulford and Frank Brown, two sophomores Dawson Spaulding and Jeff Tanner, two juniors, Derek Williams and Kevin Jaudon, to play along with his seniors. Lee English and Rick Olson. Although English and Olson have plenty of talent offensively, they have each had erratic seasons, scoring 25 points one game and eight the next. Next year Coach Ludman should have a big front line with Frank Brown, Doug Fulford and Kevin Jaudon, all of whom are over 6'2” and are grown boys. When Dawson Spaulding builds up his slight frame, he will be a

considerable force to reckon with. With a year's experience as the playmaker, Derek Williams should be a valuable point guard. He can also contribute to the scoring when he decides to penetrate. Jeff Tanrer will be a valuable back-up man. All he needs is to polish up his ball-handling. The Old Sport predicts a CAL Championship for Middle in two years and it could even come next year with good luck. THE LADY Panthers squeaked through their first round game in the State Tournament by beating Penns Grove 55-52 in an overtime game. They played the winner of the Salem-Clearview game on Tuesday. If they won that, they’ll be up against Pleasantville again. They also face a great season next year with the players from the unbeaten Freshman Team coming up The Lady Panthers have made a fine comeback after losing to Ocean City and Pleasantville and now hold second place in the CAL. They beat O.C. at home with a fine display of sharpshooting around the perimeter. I4iurie Budd scored her 100th point of her career against Hammonton Brospects for the future vfctok good for Middle VjWwnshipin Basketball.
