CG Going Green With Some Buoys Some of the* buoys maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard along the nation's waterways are being replaced temporarily with green aids to navigation—but it has nothing to do with St. Patrick’s Day next Monday. The Coast Guard project is a nationwide test to evaluate whether green buoys can be seen tetter and^beir color recognized >«rgreateF'~~distance by mariners than the traditional black buoys. Test sites throughout the United States have been selected to cover as many types of water conditions, visual backgrounds and classes of users as possible. In the Jersey Cape area, the closest green test buoy is Lighted Bell Buoy 5-D in the Deepwater Point Range of the Delaware River on the Delaware side between New Castle, Del. and Pennsville, N.J. Mariners out of Cape May might encounter these other green test buoys: Light Gong Buoy 5 in Sandy Hook Channel, N.J.; Lighted Buoy 7 in Providence River Approach Channel, ‘R.I.; Buoy 21 in Providence River Channel, R.I.; Lighted Buoy 19 in Craney Lsland Channel, Va. According to the Coast Guard, the green markings now in use on beacons in the U.S. have received wide acceptance from mariners. Green buoys have been used for some time outside of North America for various purposes and have proven effective, the Coast Guard said. The special one-year evaluation will attempt to determine if green is more effective than black as a day signal color for buoys. The green test buoys are to be placed on station between March 1 and May 31. Electric V.P. To Talk Rates £APE MAY - Joseph-T. Matalucci Backs Fox For Congress COURT HOUSE - County Republican Chairman Philip Matalucci says he is personally supporting and will continue to actively work for County Sheriff Beech Fox in his bid this year for the Congressional seat in New Jersey’s Second District, which includes Cape May County. "Although election laws prevent an official endorsement by the political parties in a primary election, I have been in touch with all of the Republican leaders and officials throughout the county and I am confident Beech has their support too,” Mr. Matalucci said in a news release. "We want a winning ticket in 1980,” the County GOP chairman continued. "As chairman, I feel Beech will be a winner, and although I can't speak officially for the Republican chairmen in the other counties throughout the Second Congressional District, I believe they will be supporting him for the nomination as we are here in Cape May."
