I saw a crocus blooming in my neighbor's yard today and this is definitely the first sign of spring - even though the weatner i# still colder than last Saturday when i\vas down at the liOhster House diner There. Wally Laudeman told me that some of the draggers had taken mackerel way off shore and that they'd had a pretty good catch. Now, before you jump right out there fishing for those Bostons, remember that I

say - "Way offshore " Hopefully, in about a week we should have some bf that school- in reach of pleasure boats and then you'll see the Jersey Cape come to life again It’s been a long winter and things are starting off a little slow, but as soon as fish are found within range, I know that we'll have plenty of fishermen off Cape May THE EARLIEST schedule I've heard on party boals so far is April 5, and the majority of then

are figuring April 15 — but a good catch of mackerel inside _ of Five Fathom Light could change all of that. I can't really blame the party boat operators for starting late this season with the price of fuel where it is, and with the scarcity of fishermen prevailing all through the winter, it’s understandable that they would take a wait-and-see attitude. It's going to be a different season this year. I’m afraid — because of in-

and there’s going

to be a lot of competition In the meantime, I'll try to keep my ears open for good catches and report them

promptly to you

ALMOST EVERYONE I know still isn't ready to go fishing, but a few warm days in a row starts a fisherman to dreaming and then the season starts I sure did admire Captain Tony Coppa’s new 79 ft. iobster boat The Janet as she was docked alongside of his old boat Mary Jo. The work deck is as big as a dance floor. Lots of luck, Capt. Tony, you sure have a fine boat

there.

I noticed quite a bit of writing about the Lower Township Police Dept, switching to propane from their gas-driven autos. I wonder if it would work on a boat? I still feel that some substitute fuel will be found before the year is out because the price of fuel is almost beyond belief. THE OIL companies have their problems too because of the massive oil spills that took place in 1979. Just this morning there was an announcer talking about oil streaks showing off our shores that came from the Mexican oil rig that overflowed last year. The situation doesn't get any better. And I can’t believe that nuclear energy is the answer — in fact, it only seems that radioactive wastes multiply our problems, so that an alternate source must be found.' Maybe propane is the answer, but whatever it is we must try to get that solution this year. NOT ONLY is inflation ruining us, so is poHution. Our way of life is being threatened. Let’s hope that an alternate source is soon found, so that we can once again enjoy using vehicles on roads with complete

freedom. It will also save our commercial • fishing

fleet.

Our vacation season is

getting nearer and nearer

and we need this help. Another good sign of

spring. The Cape May County Hatteras Anglers will have their spring meeting for the purpose of planning their trip to Hatteras at the Winchester in Cape May on March 26. They will also present awards to winners in their

club contest.

I GUESS I’ve gotten myself into quite a controversial spot trying to define what happened to Jim Demyan, of Del Haven at the end of Dead Man's Shoal last summer when a big party boat from Delaware drifted up on him while he was anchored and caused his boat over $1,000

worth of damage.

Capt. Hi Thompson of Green Creek stopped in last Friday and showed the Navigational Rules of the International Marine Law which state that any vessel at anchor must display a 2x2 ft. ball on the front forepoint of the boat in the daytime, and a 64 point light at night. It did mention that vessels seven meters or less didn’t

conform to this law.

Well, after finding out from my stepfather O.M. Corson that a meter is 39 inches, I decided that Jim's boat didn't apply to this THEN ON Saturday, Jim Solly of Green Creek who has just gotten his Captain's License, called and said that in Coast Guard Regulation 169, page 141, they defined a vessel moored or at anchor 65 ft. or over must display a black ball 2x2 ft. in the daytime — hut that under the inland rule this doesn’t apply. The Bay is considered under the inland rules. Now you still have to

Wednesday, March 26,1980 display a 64 point light at night when at anchor, but you don't have to display anything in the daytime if

you're under 65 ft.

So, it just doesn't seem that Jim got a fair shake. FRANK LYNCH at the Millman canter also wanted me to make mention of the green buoys that are being placed up the bay at Deepwater point range of the Delaware River on the Delaware side between New Castle, Delaware and Pennsville, N.J. These aren’t in observance of St. Patrick’s Day. as they are going to be > permanent fixtures to - replace the old black buoys — just in case you should run across any of these odd looking buoys in your

travels.

Capt. Tom Roberts stopped in on Monday to ask about the florescent tape, lights and whistles that we have reported had to be on all life jackets this

year.

Capt. Tom said that he understood these jackets only had to be fixed this way on vessels going over 25 miles out in the ocean and that otherwise -the Coast Guard would have them for night rescues. I'd appreciate clarification on this item. CAPT. TOM said he expected to have the My Gal ready to go overboard in another week, but he doesn't know whether his dock will be ready by then. He # said he heard there were mackerel off Five Fathom Light Tower, but that he hadn't been able to confirm this by sedlng the fishr unloaded off any trawler. At any rate, he and I both agreed that if the warm weather stayed around, we ought to be up to our ears in Bostons by April 1 (that’s a guess though) I DON'T know whether (Page 19 Please)
