Long Island Unit Sweeps

By Nancy Gauert COURT HOUSE - The Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps at Middle Township High School sponsored their fourth Annual Invitational Drill Meet, March 15th, schools from all over the East Coast participating. There were nine events of competition. The first, Platoon Basic, was won by LaSalle Military Academy, from Oakdale, Long Island, with St. Josephs Regional High School from Montvale.N.J. in second. The next event Squad Basic, was also won by LaSalle, with SmithfieidSelma High School from Smithfield, N. C. in second place and Northwestern Senior High School from Hyattsviile MD. in third, LaSalle took all five places in the Individual Knockout; the winning cadets were first thru fifth, Joe Swain, Fred Brehm, Lenny Fazio, Charles Arcobasso, and William
Nolan.
In the Color Guard competition, Xavier squad "B” from Xavier High School, New York, took first with Xavier "A" in second and St. Joseph’s taking third. The exhibition of Trick Platoon was won by LaSalle with Northwestern Senior High in second. LaSalle, once again, won first place in Exhibition Squad, with Smithfield Selma in second and North Western in third. In Exhibition Individual and Exhibition Dual. LaSalle took first, second
and third. The individuals who won exhibitions were, first thru third, Lenny Fazio, Fred Brehm, and William Nolan. The cadets taking the Exhibition Duals were First, Nelson and Brehm, Second, Fazio and Ponton, and Third, Lloyd
and Vasquez.
The last trophies awarded were for Best NJROTC, which was won by Smithfield Selma, and Best Overall Unit which
was won by LaSalle.
The trophy for Best Overall Unit was named in memory of Monroe “Flick” Tomlin who was very special to the MTHS
unit.
Judges for the meet were from each of the armed services or their Respective Reserve components. The Senlbr Judge was Captain Matthew W. Blackledge, USMC. Company Organization of NJROTC of Middle Township High School includes Commanding Officer Calvin Haskins, Executive Officer Constance Wittmeyer, OperaUng Officer, Robert Ritterhoff, Ceremonial Officer, Nancy Gansert, Communications Theresa Tozer, Armorer Pamela Funk, Supply Debra Caresse, Drill Meet Thomas Nicholas, Training James Simms, Platoon "A” Cmdr, Daniel Errickson, Platoon “B”; Cmdr Michael Richardson, and M.C.P.O. Charles Richardson, Nancy Gansert is ceremonial officer of the local NJROTC unit.

system for the public at large
TOE COUNTY HAD earlier, proposed going into a fullfledged bus transportation program, but federal funding hasn’t materialize and that proposal has yet to
pan out.

According to Freeholder Jack Bittner, the county is eligible for federal funding for the employee bus, "and we intend to take advantage of this opportunity " The freeholder director of transportation also emphasized: -’like everyone else, we are facing not only the critical escalation of fuel prices, but the availability of fuel, as well.
