(From Page 1) FiorilH .had spearheaded an effort to reopen a recently renovated SPCA animal shelter in that city and arranged to^have the Cumberland County Veterinary Service give professional advice at no cost to the operators of the SPOVaherter. MR. CROWLEY recounted the actor's
reply:
"There is the answer to any problem in Cape May County. Find a civic leader like the good Mayor Fiorilli who can get the various agencies and interested men and women to meet — with the understanding each may have to give a little for the benefit of all.” "I. told him," Mr. Crowley said, "I was not active now, but that press notices reported the SPCA and an Animal Welfare Society working as separate units again because of personality
problems.
MR. HOLLIMAN'S reply, according to Crowley, was that amateurs without professional experience in organizing and directing a prsject tending to create management problems. The AOA president said he had seen this happen frequently throughout the
country.
But, the actor told Mr.
Crowley, an answer to the problem in many instances is reached when all parties concerned meet, with a willingness to give and not to expect that all their
demands would be met. "AS AN example of that
thinking," Mr. Crowley related, "he recalled ]row some of his group at one time wanted to abolish euthanasia. Others wanted it put in effect as soon as an animal was in their custody. A compromise was made whereby an animal would be kept for four weeks before being put to sleep. That gave them time to advertise, which resulted in getting many animals back to their owners or finding someone
to adopt an animal.” Mr. Crowley said the
actor explained to him that the delay in getting back to him was because he had been on location making a motion picture and that he was just now going through flies to get caught up on his Actors and Others for
Animals responsibilities.

(From Page 1) body that it assign a police officer to make periodic checks of the SPCA pound in Cold Spring, in the wake of continued complaints that dog officer Dennis Kelly isn’t properly taking care of the strays he picks
up.
The attorney told the Township Committee March 24 that a specially assigned officer could report back to the governing body and that criminal charges could be brought if warranted "because there's no reason
for this."
MR. CALLINAN’S remarks were precipitated by allegations from resident Catherine "Cass" Clark that Mr. Kelly has charged as high as $100 for a dog at the pound, that small and large dogs were keot in the small pen together with nothing but cold, wet pavement to lie on, and that he doesn't keep proper records of the animals that are picked up. "I think the township should do something about him," she told the committee. “Nobody’s
checking on him."
Mr. Callinan said there was no doubt that the township has the jurisdiction to take proper action in cases of actual
animal abuse.
THERE HAVE been complaints expressed before about alleged inhumane treatment at the SPCA pound, but when one area newspaper followed up on such allegations last year, nothing inhumane was found. Ms. Clark, however, indicated this was because thpre was
advance warning.
She emphasized she was referring to "inhumane treatment" and reiterated her allegation that "He [Kelly] feels like he didn't have to answer to
anybody."
