If these terms spell COAST GUARD to you, you probably belong to a very vital group in Cape May County If you think Semper Paratus is the motto of the Boy Scouts, and Ocean SUtion is a stop on the commuter train to Philadelphia — you are most likely on the receiving end of what the local Coast Guard community provides the Jersey Cape. The individual makeup of this special community changes daily, but the influence it exerts remains coastant. As a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Coast Guard is very visible in our county and undertakes many varied missions.

THE BUOY, tender Hornbeam services 175-200 navigational buoys each year in a range that extends from Manasquan to Cape May and into Delaware Bay. Coast Guard Group Cape May responds to over 3,000 - calls for help each year, with a normal summer weekend producing 40 to 50 calls

The rfenge of operations for the cutter Pt Franklin and the rescue boats of Cape May Station is from Ocean City. N.J. to Ocean City, Md. but Coast Guard helicopters extend this range all the way from the eastern shore of Virginia to Barnegat Light. The county is enriched by over 3,800 active duty and retired military personnel and their dependents who annually spend more than $15 million, a. BtlT THE services that Cape May County residents receive from the Coast Guard community and the money added to the Jersey Cape economy are really only small parts of the total Coast Guard influence here. Benefits to the county citizens extend far beyond the operational duties of its members, for Coast Guard personnel and their families give of themselves to our municipalities, schools, churches and organizations. This human resource is tremendous and the county would be a poorer place were it not for the military community. When Coast Guard personnel leave the job at the end of the work day, they continue serving their fellow citizens by bringing their special talents to the community. Many are members of local rescue squads and fire departments; they coach little league, sing in choirs and lead Scout troops; they operate shops, organize fund-raisers and assist the less fortunate of their community. ADD THE military family — spouses ami children — to this picture, and the influence spreads even wider, as dependents bring rich experiences to Cape May County from all over the world. Spouses teach, nurse, keep accounts and serve in a myriad of other positons, paid and unpaid. They provide music, work in day-care centers and entertain at nursing homes. They volunteer countless hours to non-profit organizations as diverse as the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and the Mobile

Meals Program. The Navy Chaplains, on loan to the Coast Guard, regularly assist local churches in both religious services and counseling. THE JERSEY Cape is also enriched by former Coast Guard men and women who fell in love with the area during assignment and have made it their permanent home upon

retirement. These people may sell you a house, make decisions about the education of your children, fill a cavity in a tooth, or rent you a room in a local guesthouse. In future weeks this column will spotlight the of some of these people as well as report on items of interest and importance to this vital military community.
