Linda Ronstadt has always been a good, consistent singles artist, but her albums have usually been tepid affairs. Possessing a strong, uniquely powerful voice, her talents have too often been submerged beneath bland string arrangements and corny country-rock cliches. Linda Ronstadt's new album Mad Ix»ve (Asylum) is a wild rocking record that catches her in the right light. That's not to say this album is flawless. Both Talking in the Dark and Hurt So Bad sound as if they were out-takes added at the last minute to meet a deadline But two bum Tracks don’t detract from the importance of this record. By now everyone has heard her brilliant single How Do I Make You, with its soaring vocal and firey production, but Linda also does a credible job of covering Elvis Costello's Girls Talk. Neil Young’s l,ook Out For My l.ove. and The Hollies' aijrangement of I Can't I^t Go. My personal highlight is a new tune Cost of I,ove not so much for Linda Ronstadt's vocal, but for the piercing guitar breaks by Mark Goldenberg who also penned the number. THIS ISN'T Linda Ronstadt’s ''new wave album some have been claiming, but, instead, the product of an established artist being pushed to the limits by the many young demanding talents of today. Linda Ronstadt was challenged, and with Mad I .eye. she’s come up with a winner. Not so with Bob Seger, as his long-awaited new album Against the Wind (Capitol) sounds tired, flat and very predictable. His rockers are based on simple, over-done boogie patterns, and his ballads lack the electric tension his best moments have always had. Bob Seger has made some of rock’s finest records, but this isn’t even close to being one of them. AREA STATIONS haven't started playing ska records, yet, but all the major cities arc reporting great response to the debut albums- by Madness and The Specials. Now a third ska band. The Selector, has issued their first record, and they should soon be

joining the other two on the trade charts. Musically, The Selector is no different than the other ska groups, as there's the dominating reggae rhythm and influence of American soul, but The Selector comes off being a bit more original as they feature a woman vocalist, Pauline Black. This music is made for ' dancing and having fun so check out The Selector. Gary Moore is a British journeyman rock guitarist, who is best known on our shores for his time with Thin Lizzy. Back on the Streets (Jet) is his first solo outing, and he proves he's a fine guitarist, a limited vocalist, and a writer with some promise. Maybe he * should hook up with another group.
