Wednesday.night, March 26, the Cape. May' County Hatteras Anglers met at Ihc WincheMer in Cape MayWJh&lr annual spring meeting. Jack Osborne of Cape May Court House was elected president, succeeding Walter Hendee of Stone Harbor, and Rill llalbniner of Villas was reelected vice president. Also re-elected to the office of secretary-treasurer was W. Boyd Tyler Jr. The club had 19 members and 11 guests in attendance, and a > surprise visitor in Captain' Bill foster, who traveled all the way from Hatteras, N.C. to attend the meeting. Capt. Bill also brought news that thr^e £ed drum have been taken in the nets on the Outer Banks, and that big blue claw crabs are in abundance all over Pamlico Sound. This last species showing so early in the year is a rarity on the Outer Banks because most of the crabbing is done October. November and D<*ember and then from July to September. MANY UNUSUAL things have been happening, however, in the ocean this year. Capt. Bill also told of a large school of jumbo blues found floating belly up on the waters off Hat-

teras about a month ago, which the local commercial men just gaffed and pulled aboard One working fisherman got 42 boxes in a day this way. Theories on what happened to those big choppers ranged from a sudden •move into a lower thermocline to an underwater explosion. The fish were sent to market and found to be saleable so the' mystery of what killed them is still unsolved. The local club thanked Capt. Bill for coming such a long way and then went into plans for their fall surf fishing tournament to be held over on the Avalon beach on Sept. 6 in cooperation with the Avalon Chamber of Commerce. Ed Wright of the Avalon Chamber was nt the meeting as a guest of Tony Vlstemo of Court House, and he helped finalize some of the plans. This year it will be a oneday tournament and will accommodate 18 to 24 surf fishing teams from all along the eastern seaboard. MANY. MANY fish tales were exchanged, and it turned out thaf five members are planning to visit the Outer Banks in

search od*channel bass a week or so after Easter. Tffree other members are planning a trip to Virginia for those spot-tails so a little rivalry is developing. One other thing that was learned is that down on the Outer Banks they’ve been taking a lot of large weakfish in haul seines in the ocean and that bodes well for our, tiderunner angling here on the Jersey Cape. *lt just doesn't seem possible that fishing, as vge know it, is only atx^t three weeks away, but it’s a real welcome thought Boh Hrrtiog of Haddon Heights was reflecting on last April, May and June, and reminding me that in the first part of April, he and Charlie Farr and I were loading up on mackerel, and that during the month of April and May we caught up with those big weakfish and some very nice black drum. IT CAN’T come too soon It’s been a long winter and

already there are reports of bunker in the stake nets along with some scattered reports 6f catches of stripers. We took a ride around.the boat yards with Capt. Bill Foster before he returned to Hatteras. and he was amazed as we were at the amount of pleasure boats up for sale. IN THE meantime, don’t forget this is 1900. and the theme is "Take a kid fishing!” Why Pencils Have Erasers Dept.: I was called Friday night by Karl Jones of Cape May to inform me that there is no such thing as a 64-point light. Karl explained the points of the compass to me and stated that there is only a 32-point light that can be seen from any quarter. I wish I could say that it was a printer's error, but I am the guilty party, and I should have known better. Karl also mentioned the extremely low tides we have been having in connection with the moon being closest to the Earth this month. I believe I got that one right, but I’ve sure found out from many readers since about my error / -
