Sideline Shots By Thf Old Sport
It has been brought to the iittention of the Old Sport by several local sports fans especially the "Women Libbers that he has been very rough on the I^ady Panthers of the Middle Twp High SOhool Bantetball Team If this is the impression his writing has conveyed, he would like to apologize to Misses Laurie Hudd. Sue McKinley, Amy Brockman. Honnie Thompson. Kris Salvesen, Arlene Adens.'eta! He has not meant to criticize any individual player, and he loves them all. biit he was sold a bill of goods on the ft>rls basketball program at Middle early in the season
With all the members^of last year's team returning and the addition of a solid basketball player from New Zealand, they were going to be a shoo-in for the C.A.L. Championship Bl T IT DIDN'T work out that way ‘With a heart breaking loss to Ocean City and then two losses to Pleasantvllle, they wound up in second place Their overall record was not bad but their performance in three games against Pleasantville left a whole lot to be desired But with several outstanding freshmen coming up from Gary Barber's team, maybe next year will be different With the advent of
warmer weather, Memorial Field w now a beehive of activity. Boys' track team, with Coaches Bart Lewnes and Bruno Cucllari. Carl Baker's girls' track team, Chuck Dougherty's baseball team and Art Tuel's girls' softball team make good use of all the available space. AND THANKffjto the hard work of (Clarence Davies, the field is in good shape for the springtime activities He has brought down cinders from Bryn Mawr, Pa. fbr the running And after he rolls it a few more times, it will be ready for the track meets. Softball teams in the county are chomping at the bit and will be starting their season on May 5 The local team sponsored by Parkway Exxon is still looking for players, but Harry Back and Keith Seaman promise to have a competitive team. MIDDLE TWP will have a championship contender if hard work means anything Chuck Dougherty runs a tight ship and the players seem to thrive on it. Practice sessions look like a major league set-up with everyone working hgrd and no one sitting around doing nothing. Veterans returning are J.C. Collins, Art Cannon. John McCray. Jjmmy Killian. Neal Chase, Rick Stout. Garry Hunter has elected to play soccer and will be missed. but Danny Arenberg looks like ^ valuable addition to the batting strength. And Richie Khinrsmith. a freshman, _ should help along wfth Tommy Gihorski and Mike Reardon. AT THE suggestion of Chuck Mrllmain t the Old Sport would like to support the idea of a Softball League for men (and women) over 40 years of
age. To start with, there are Chuck McRvain. Eddie Shute, Dave Bond and Bob Moaibrooks. Others interested in playing, should get in touch with the Old Sport or Chuck. How about this, Gregg Arnold? Could the Rec Dept, sponsor a league like this? Lt. Cmdr. James A* Roorbach of the U.S. Navy was in Court House visiting his parents, Art and Becky Roorbach recently. Jimmy played Midget Football for the Old Sport back in the 50s and comes from a family of athletes ft HAS BEEN brought to the Old Sport's attention that the hockey nets have been taken from the Street Hockey Arena at the County Park, and because they have not been replaced, the boys have no place to play and have had to play down in Rio Grande. Let’s hope the Park Commission can get new goals soon. The boys track team, the girls track team, the girls softball team have all been practicing diligently and the Old Sport will hgye stories about them m future editions Middle Twp H.S. began its spring sports session April 8 against Absegami in all six competitions: Golf, Girls Track, Boys Track, Boys Tennis,* Baseball and Softball.
