Burdette Expands Orthopedic Care

The department is also able to provide the county's large senior citizen population with special treatment for bone and joint fractures as well as arthritic problems. As an example of the department's new services, recently two women patients had joint replacements performed at the hospital, marking the first time such a procedure was performed locally where the patients could be close to family and friends during recovery .' THESE FIRST two operations at Burdette - a hip replacement and a total knee replacement — were performed by Dr Warren MacDonald Both patients are reported to be progressing well

The Orthopedic Department Was started shortly after Dr. James Judson who had trained in surgery at Philadelphia's Thomas Jefferson -University Hospital, joined the Burdette staff in 1075. NEW DEVEMfPMENTS In the designs of internal fixation (nails) allow fracture patienta faster healing and shorter recovery time. One of the most publicized advancements in sports medicine has been the use of the srthroicope for .evaluation ,of knee problems The arthroscope at Burdette enables physicians to look directly into the knee joint to get a more exact diagnosis The availability of the new services in Cape May County is expected td cut down on patient trfps to Atlantic City and Philadephia for orthopedic evaluation

Workfare ‘Boondoggle’ *

TRENTON Assem blyman Joseph Chinnici, a senior jnember of the Joint Committee on Ap propriations, has blasted New Jersey's workfare system as "the biggest myth ever created by a state agency " After Questioning state welfare officials appearing before the join! committee recently, Chinnici said, "the system ihat the general public thought was to have saved New Jersey taxpayers millions of dollars has turned out to be a boondoggle that now employs 60 new people and saves nothing." THE CAPE-CUMBER-LAND legislator commented that last year it cost *750.000 to supervise spending of *12 million for the workfare system. This year, the program needs *1 million to supervise spending of 14.5 million, that's a 33 percent Increase in administrative cost. According to Mr. Chinnici. only 25.000 of the

650,000 welfare recipients in the stale qualify for workfare, and only half of the 25,000 are actually employable. The net result , he continued, is that nothing is saved except for the handful of able-bodied people who are discouraged from applying THE BRIDGETON legislator declared that "those who are accepted for workfare arc not out to work in productive jobs They are turned over 'o the Dcpartmerft of Labor A Industry, ^here they arc , put in 'training programs' for which we have hired training officers at ad ditional state expense "There must be a way that the workfare program people can better deal with this problem." Mr Chlnhici continued. "They should be able to find real work for these workfare people that will not cost the taxpayers of the state more than ita worth and tell the tax^yer* the truth ".
