Hands-On First Aid For Pupils ERMA — A boy opening a cardboard box with a razor knife slips, the end of his index finger is cut off and blood Is spurting... A girl running up the stairs catches her clog shoes and falls backward on her hip and arm. She is lying on the landing between floors... A janitor is Ailing a lawn mower from a gas can. the gasoline hits the hot engine and there is a flash explosion, burning his hands and feet... A teacher grasps her chest and falls from her chair to the floor, she is not breathing... These hypothetic situations were set up by health teacher Doug DeWeese for the seventh grade classes at Teitelman School recently. The students had just com-. pleted a 35 day course in Human Anatomy and First Aid, and were applying their ledrned (skills to simulated situations. Each class wa p . divided into groups of four and lead to the “accident" site. They had to evaluate the situation, check vital signs, get the necessary materials and transport their victims to the nurse's office. Various skills were used such as direct pressure and digital pressure points to stop bleeding, splinting, bandaging, proper qare of amputated parts, use of litters and transportation, mouth to mouth resuscitation and hov/ to get emergency help. "No matter how young you child is, it is always good to know First Aid," an obsen'er remarked..
