COURT HOUSE - Congressman Bill Hughes’ recently announced opposition to President Carter's 10 cent a gallon gas tax was "farcicarand hypocritical,’’ according to Republican congressional contender Beech Fox. Speaking before a group of supporters at the informal opening of his new larger headquarters next to the Murphy Mart Shopping Center here, Mr. Fox said he opposed the gas tax because its chief aim was not to conserve energy but to add 810 Police Getting The Axe W CAPE MAY- CUiien rejection by a 30-vote margin last Tuesday of a request to exceed the budget cap may well result in this community reverting to the one-man police force it had almost a decade ago. Indications are $17,000 is being cut from the police budget, resulting in the sixman force being cut all the way back' to Chief Ralph Riggitano. The Commissioners wanted to exceed the cap by almost 141,000-a move that would have added 11 cents to the local tax rate. The police budget cut will leave about $12,000; of that ■ about $3,000 goes for leasing the borough police car. The Commissioners have also been forced to cut their annual contribution to the fire department by 80 percent, withhold a $7,500 contribution to the Cape May Rescue Squad, and rescind a 5 percent nay increase for municipal employees. Unconfirmed reports are that the rescue squad may refuse to enter the borough if the contribution isn’t forthcoming. Ironically, voter rejection followed a traumatic summer in the Greater Cape May area where there were numerous rapes. The borough police department investigated four rapes which resulted in the only two rape arrests in the area. The two apprehensions In the rape cases were among a total of 84 criminal arrests here last year, not including 16 juvenile and 7 drug arrests. •

billion to $15 billion dollars to federal revenues. “CONGRESSMAN HUGHES knows as well as I do that his proposed legislation, offered ostensibly to repeal the Carter tax gas, standi little chance for passage,"‘Mr. Fox stated. “Hughes also knows that grandstanding with such an issue during this election year makes for excellent media theatrics. "It’s interesting to see Hughes profess to be concerned about a 10-cent a gallon gas tax when just three weeks ago he unveiled anotl er scheme to Bank President Addresses Stock Exchange Club NEW YORK — Guarantee Bank chairman and president Joseph Bradway Jr. reported on the condition of the bank to the AMEX Club, American Stock Exchange, at its March meeting. An increase of$91,790,000 or 30 percent over 1978 assets was the key growth figure, he reported. With chapters around the world, the AMEX Club includes officers and directors of the American Stock Exchange as well as brokers and analysts oi financial houses. Speakers appear by invitation and represent organizations listed with the American Stock Exchange.

change the Windfall Profits Tax Program,” Fox continued. "He' would have eliminated the income tax reductions now scheduled for 60 percent of the program . revenuea. This would have increased taxes for all Americans by $135 billion over the next 10 Vears.” FOX SAID THAT if Hughes really wanted to help in the energy and economy battles, he should introduce legislation tq abolish the federal Department of Energy. ' "With decontrol now imminent, this department is no longer needed, and its elimination would save the taxpayers 412 billion a year, reduce the federal payroll by as much as 20,000 employees, and end the federal gas allocation system. "This system," Mr. Fox emphasized, "has been proven to be earning more problems than it solves and is now threatening the summer resort industry with restrictions on boating and other resort activity. ” The free market should control the energy distribution system,'with minimal regulation unless a national emergency arises; according to Mr. Fox. "If Bill Hughes really wants to do us a favor, he would Work for less 'government, less bureaucracy and a lower federal budget," he concluded. • .
