Sounds
By Charles P. Limey ;
Despite the' fact some lush string arrangements .have' invaded Warren Zeyon’s music, his new album "Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School" (‘Asylum) offers no real surprises. Zevon is a master of writing off-beat tales and singing them in a deadpan voice. Instmmentally, the sound might be stark, but lyrically he attacks his listeners with sharp, biting satire. Already firmly placed in the Top 30, this record is further proof Warren Zevon is one of the most important singersongwriters to emerge in the 70s. WARNER BROTHERS HAVE dipped into the Jimi Hendrix vaults again, but, this time the album "Nine To The Universe" should have remained un re leased. While Hendrix's guitar work is flawless, hie fellow musicians seem to be struggling, as the tunes plod along. As the liner notes point out, these sessions were Jimi Hendrix’s initial forays into jazz. He was

experimenting in a new, different g>nre and probably ntver even thought to issue these sides. Knowing that, Warners should have either released this as a budget album or not at all. ANYONE WHO WANTS prime rhythm and blues from the 50s should pick up the specially priced two record set by Sam Price. On "Rib Joint" (SavoyArista), it's obvious old Sam played a mean piano, but the real star was the late tenor saxophonist King Curtis. Each solo is testimony to the fact King Curtis was a unique talent who had a style of his own. In these days of superstars and multi-track recordings, these simple sides stand a cut above recent releases, simply because they have a warmth and feeling the others will never have. Hopefully, I'll be able to review other Savoy reissues in forthcoming columns, as this is a series which deserves our support. HOT ON THE heels of his
successful "You’re Never Alone With A Schizophrenic" album, Ian Hunter returns wtth a tworecord live set, "Welcome To The Club" (Chrysalis). With Hunter's Dylanesque vocals and the sizzling guitar of Mick Ronson, this collection is a must for any rock fan. Besides new versions of Mott The Hoople classics, such as "All The Way From Mephis," "Angeline." and "All The Young Dudes," he also does a credible job on Sonny Bono’s "Laugh At Me," some songs from his recent solo albums, and four new tracks. All in all, Ian Hunter is at ease onstage in front of his fans, and this should be a big selling record.
