Carter Policies Devastating Cape Housing, say Realtors
WILDWOOD Federal fiscal policies of excessively high interest rates and across the board credit lightening have had a devastating effect on the housing market in Cape May County, according to the Greater WildwoodCape May County Board of Realtors High rates of inflation are causing interest rales to soar eroding consumer purchasing power, raising taxes, reducing housing starts and sales, and reducing investment in new structures, said board president James Sofroney, who places the blame for inflation on poor fiscal planning at the federal
level.
"Inflation can be brought under control only if we get responsible federal policies, not by President
, Carter s recent cosmetic* spending cuts' and in-, creases in taxes." ho stated in a news release noting that the county t>oard of Realtors is urging Congress to support a fiscal plan developed by the National Association of Realtors The proposed is know n as the two percent solution and was developed by N.A R executive vice president Dr Jack Carlson. Its goals are to: •Slow federal spending by at least 2 percent or $fi billion during the remainder of fiscal 1980 Slow spending growth by at least 2 percent or $15 billion during fiscal 1981 -Achieve a balanced budget in 1981 by slowing spending, not by raising
taxes

growth after 1981 to 2 percent less than the growth in personal income If the recommendations are adopted. Mr Sofroney estimates that •Inflation and interest rates would begin to decline significantly over the next year -The inflation rate could be reduced by as much as 2 percentage points in 1981 -Productivity, employment and average spendable income per household would increase substantially. "Only d stable economic climate will enable the housing industry to meet the unprecedented demand it is sure to face in the 1980s." he continued. "We believe in 'the 2 percent solution' and will continue to urge congressional approval of this responsible policy.” The County Board of Realtors is also calling upon the help of concerned citizens, and anyone interested in "helping in the fight against inflation" is asked to fill out a "2 per cent Solution Coupon," available at the Greater Wildwood-Cape May County Board of Realtors office. 5300 Pacific Ave,.

At Birth Defects Conf.
Prenatal Care Is Underscored
COURT HOUSE - The state's consultant for Maternal and Child Health told a gathering of concerned parents and news media here last Wednesday that exposure of women early in their pregnancy to such substances as cigarette smoke, alcohol and even aspirin constitutes "a terrible public health problem." ’".It doesn’t hurt the parents to any extent," said Dr Norman Kendall, but it’s devastating to the fetus." HIS COMMENTS came during a question and a'nswer session after state and county health officials had assured more than 40 parents on hand for the conference that data todate showed no correlation between numerous miscarriages - and birth defects in pregnancies that came due earlier this year especially in the Cold Spring. N Cape May area
There was also no. correlation seen between the fetal abnormalities and the gypsy moth spray Sevin, authorities said. Dr. Kendall's comments about the precautions expectant mothers should take agaihst any foreign substance especially early in thoir pregnancy came after he was asked what his recommendation would be to pregnant women in Cape May County. LATER. IN response to .another question. Dr George Ha I pin, director of the state's Parental and Child Health Services, indicated that the danger to fetal development could actually be greater inside than outside the home because of the relative concentrations of potentially harmful substances within the hoifie as opposed to outside in the open The doctor was specifically asked where the greater danger was in
an area like the Jersey Cape where a pregnant woman might be living in a rural area susceptible to pesticide spraying in farm and woodlands and with such normal household substances as cigarette smoking, alcohol and Jimne bug sprays THE* HEALTH officials released data showing that the rate of congenital malformations and, fetal deaths at Burdette Tomlin and Shore Memorial Hoapitals in the time span 1975-79 weren't abnormally high when compared statewide, and. in fact, were' lower in several Instances. They added, however, that more comprehensive studies will be made concerning central nervous system disorders in three babies born earlier this year wilhma month’s time in the Cold Spring, Green Creek areas'. FREEHOLDER Gerald Thornton presided over the conference at the County Health Dept and he called upon all levels of govern ment to switch to safer biological methods of at tacking gypsy moths for the.psychological relief of pregnant mothers and others concerned over the . use of the spray Sevin This shouldibe the case, he said, at least until thore is conclusive, scientific evidence on whether Sevin is dangerous to pregnant * f^igeJ Please i
