Thursday was the Mg day because Bill Halbruner and I went back to Ocracoke with Capt Thurston. I hooked and Capt. Thurston gaffed a 27 lb. drum for our first, and It turned out later, only score for the spring trip. BUI Halbruner had two tough breaks that day when a red drum pulled the hook and. later another channel bass straightened out his snap swivel. This catch for me fulfilled a promise I made to Joey Rodla Jr. He and his wife Linda gave me a Penn Squidder last Christmas, and I told him! was going to try to catch a red drum on it. The line was Cortland Cam-O-flage-36 lb. test that the company sent to me when I wrote to them about obtaining a 1,000 yd. spool. They sent

me 100 yards as a gift, and I backed this up with 75 yards of 40 lb. white Cortland line so that drum had a lot of good wishes rldiig) on him. ON FRIDAY the real event of the day was pulled off by Capt Thurston as he cast out on the top of the shoai and hooked a 12 lb. sturgeon He gave me the rod to reel it In. I’ve talked to a lot of people around Hatteras, and, they can't remember anyone catching a sturgeon on hook and line before Capt. Thurston has been fishing and guiding parties for over 60 years, and he said this was the first sturgeon he ever hooked THE FISHING conditions weren't the greatest during our stay, but as Capt. Thurston said, "That one red drum is the difference between success and failure." If it hadn't been for him and his unique boat the "South Wind." we could have gone home empty-handed.
