At the cUrt of this week the big tiderunner weekfith were tUll taking up-the lead in variety of catches In Delaware Bay. Thoae Mg weakiee were plentiful all alopg Brandywine Shoal clear up to 14 Foot light. Some scattered drum catches were made, but the big weak let and medium sized bluet really prevailed. Wednesday night, at 1 was picking tome bait at Jim Wallace's, Cpt. Bob Hchnmaa of the Sea Star told me he had a party out that day, and that they drifted all the way from Brown Shoal ito 14 Foot Light, and thtft two fellows on the stern of hit boat loaded their coolers with Mg tiderunners. WHEN CPT. Tom Roberts and I arrived at Rosempns, Cpt. Mike Vertges of the Sea Witch had a party cleaning tube of Mg weakles they had gotten that afternoon. Pete Barrett o(j “The New Jersey Fitherman” magazine was along with - Mike, and probably wrote a story on the trip. Cpt. Tom and I loaded up our gear on the Janie TV II, and headed out toward 14' Light. In the 25 foot water we found Cpt. Dick Weber on the Bonito, Cpt. Dave Rooeman on the Top Drawer II, Cpt. Jack Osborne on the Red Beajgi, and several other boats. CPT. DICK said they all had their decks full of weakfish but no drum. He made a move inshore to the edge of the 90 foot slough while Cpt. Dave made a move up the bay to the tip of the horseshoe, and Cpt. Jack headed for the bam — Cpt. Dick got one drum on his move, Cpt. Dave got two humpbacks with his
change.
Cpt. Roberts hooked a 12 lb. weakfish at our first stop, then I hooked a fllk lb. Muefish. Hearing Cpts. Dick and Dave talk made us edgy, so we pulled anchor and got in back of the Top Drawer II. Cpt. Roberts then hooked a 9V6 lb. weakfish and that was all she wrote for us. NOW. IF YOU’RE thinking "are these guys complaining about catching those big tiderunners?” Well, they are and they aren’t. Any fisherman wants to catch fish, and a big tiderunner is a nice fish to catch, but a drum fisherman is a peculiar breed. He goes out there to catch drum, and when he doesn't catch drum he's not happy with his trip. True, a big weakfish keeps him from getting skunked, but he still wants a drum and anything short of that is a failure in his eyes. Monday night Palmer Way went out there again and got a 74 lb. drum, which was another good feat, and gives him a seat of honor in the drum fisherman's book; and last week Cpt. Steve Rea found three drum for his party on the Bivo, but for the most part, the drum have taken a little holiday. I believe they're up the bay spawning or using the inshore slough, but they'll be back either before I finish this column or next week on the full moon MY SPAWNING theory was strengthened Thursday night as Dr. Ray
Brawn of Court House, Charlie Robinson of South Saavilk, ahd I tried to catch* drum out near the pin top on Brandywine Shoal. Many, many weakfish were caught and Dr. Ray and I each caught a weakfish in the six lb. class, but Charlie had to take a blank that night. As we were running down the canal, Cpt. Jim Solly on the Fiesta passed us with a boat full of happy fishermen, and a load of big weakfish. Cpt. Dave Rooeman, on the Top Drawer II, was along side of us, and pulled his anchor and Joined Jack Osborne of the Red deard somewhere up the bay where he caught 60 lb. drum. In the meantime, Jack caught two drum in the 60 lb. class and 28 tiderunner weakfish which made him king for the night as they were the only drum I heard of being

When we got hack to the dock, Randy Laudeman’s net boat was there with two drum In It, and about 50 or more big weakfish Randy's got a net out around Brandywine, and he’s been doing real well. ON FRIDAY. I had An idea that the drum might have been working inshore, but after about l 1 * hours there I decided to Join Jack Osborne offshore John Manganaro, Charlie Robinson and I arrived there just lA time to see Jack hook a drum on 12 lb. test line which took him all
