South Cape May Severance From Beach Restoration Hit
CAPE MAY - CongreMman - Bill Hughes testified recently in support of a pending federal project to rebuilt the badly eroded beaches of Cape May City and stabilize them against future beach .erosion But he also told U.S. Army Corps of Engineer officials he is disappointed they recommended severing the South . Cape May portion of the prbposal Hughes who has sponsored the project in ' Congress since 1976. said the beach restoration program is needed to rectify a long-standing federal debt to the Gty of Cape May ••HKAGI EROSION HAS been a tragic problem in Cape May." Hughes told a public hearing sponsored by the fymy Corps "Ft has robbed the resort of its greatest economic asset, and has caused a tremendous aesthetic loss for all of us who are familiar with Cape May "This erosion was caused by the Federal government's construction of the Cold Spring Jetties, and it must be corrected by the federal gdvemment." he declared MR. HUGHES IS DISAPPOINTED that the Army Corps has recommended against tl»e proposed construction of new storm protection structure In Lower Township He said, he has always spoasored this project as a comprehensive beach restoration and storm protection program for Cape May County, and that it didn’t make sense to delete the Lower Township protections . If the local officials feel strongly about retaining the Lower Township project and are willing to commit the needed matching funds. Hughes said he will continue to
sponsor the project in its entirety THE CAPE MAY BEACH project in-
cludes the construction of two new groins, a weir-breakwater and deposition basin,
and periodic beach replenishment The •project is needed to correct a
problem which began in 1911, when the government constructed the Cold Spring Jetties to protect the U.S. Coast Guard
Training Center in Cape May The jctti« tM,
disrupted the local tidal patterns virtually wiped out the. beaches of Cape
May
In the last 25 years alone, the beaches have eroded at the rate of nearly 600,000 cubic yards of sand per year. Although the citv and state have spent more than U million between them in an effort to stem this erosion, the beaches have continued to wash away at an alarming rate CONGRESS HAS ALREADY acknowledged-the federal government’s blame for this problem, and has agreed to pay the full costs for the beach restoration program. The South Cape May portion was severed because the Corps found it wasn’t economically feasible since the State of New Jersey had decided against including the area between'Cape May and Cape May Point as part of the state Green Acres park system. City and especially West Cape May officials had hoped the Army Engineer’s project in South Cape May would help alleviate longstanding flooding problems in that area
The Cape May project is due to start in
1983
