The firat week of June found the drum still playing hide and seek, but some • scattered catches have been made up the bay off Peirce* Point and south of Bug Light. * Howard Severance and the Tomlin brother* continue to dominate the drum catches while many of us who tried to fish off near Brandywine Shoal came up with mostly big weakies and large bluefish Many drum have been heard in the vicinity of 14 ft. Light, and the pin top near Brandywine, but the majority, of catches have been in the upper bay IN THE middle of the week heavy thunderstorms hampered' a lot of the fishing A report on four fellows from Del Haven is

One disquieting report from Tom Rice, of Destin, Fla . vacationing here. The day after he was fishing with Bill llalbruner and me on the Janie TVII he went over and- visited his old friend C’pt. Ed took him -out with his 1 o’clock party into the ocean. On one drift right off the beachfront, they hooked up with tlderunner weakfish and slammer blues on the port side of the Royal Flush and on the starboard side they hooked three big black drum WITH A LOT of skill Cpt. Ed’s mate managed to gaff two of the drum which Tom said were in the 70-lb. class, but they lost one of those humpbacks because of the time it took to land the other two. Now. there’s no doubt that some of our drum schools are on the way out. and that the big weakies are already at the mouth of the bay. but I believe there are still a lot of drum up the bay. and that we’ll have a banner night on them if the weather will cooperate. I’M GLAD to see those big weakies out front. Maybe they’ll do like last year, and stay around into July inside of McCries Shoal. I’ll never forget the night t’pt. Elmer Higgins and I had with those big weaklks fishing with Al Fiocca and Arnle, from the Villas and two other fellows. We were using white worms baited with squid and clam right on the bottom, and wound up with 25 tiderunners before 10:30 in the evening. I’d never seen tiderunner weakfish caught at night in the ocean before, and it was a big thrill Tiderunner action in the bay lasted a long while this year, and unbelievable quantities were taken. Some of those big weaks are still being taken around Brandywine shoal and deep in the anchorage, so get out there as soon as you can. It can’t last much longer as far as the big tiderunners arc concerned. During the big storm Tuesday night, Joe llalbruner and his newphew Wayne beat their way back to the canal, but Joe said that Cpt. Frank Thompson on the Rebel B had one drum for his party at 14 ft. light. They sure earned it with the beating they took in the storm.
Joe said they saw a big, black cloud coming at them from the north, that they pulled their anchor right away and ran for the beach; however, it caught them about halfway to the 'anal, and at times the rain was so heavy that they couWpj£ see three feet aheadof their boat BILL HALBRUNER and I were supposed to take Bob Trantor and Joe Wall* of Northfield out that night, and we studied every way we could as to what might develop until Bill heard on the radio that the Delaware boats were returning to port, and that made up our minds for us. It just wasn’t worth taking a chance going out that night, and I’m awfully glad we didn’t. Sometimes a storm can catch up with you unexpectedly after you’ve gotten on the water, but if you’re cautious studying the weather before you leave the dock you have a better chance of staying out of trouble. ITS HARD to admit that the best of the drum season may be behind us, because we’ll still be out there trying next week, but I guess we might as well break out the outriggers and our ocean gear because it’s just about swingover time from the bay to the ocean. We haven’t had the best of weather in this drum season; maybe we’ll get a better break on the ocean fishing. Sign-up Set For Lessons In Swimming N.
