The effect 6f last season's gasoline crisis is reflected in transportation statistics released recently by the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce. According to the Chamber figures, traffic indicators were down between two and six percent, with the sole increase reflected in airline use. Between 1978 and '79 there was a drop of over 100,000 vehicles using the Ocean Drive toll bridges reflecting a two percent decrease.

The

Cape May-Lewes reported a"" sik"

percent drop in passengers, down by 30,000 and a four percent or 8,400 decrease in vehicular crossings. On the Garden State Parkway, the number of vehicles passing through the Cape May Toll Plata was down by oVer 242,600, a drop-off of four percent between 1978 and ’79. According to the Chamber data, Allegheny Airlines reported a 12 percent increase in flights and a 17 percent jump in passengers last year; flights up by 500, the passenger increases over 2,800.

Retired Educators Learn About Wheaton Village

. CORBIN CITY - Millville's Wheaton Village was described in word and picture during the May 27 luncheon meeting of the Cape May County Retired Educators Assn, at Mulford's Corbin House Alan Richter, representing Wheaton Village, presented colored slides and a descriptive commentary on the village which is designed to present a facsimile of a Victorian town of 100 years ago with a main street, general store, school, craft

shops, a lake and a glass

factory.

AN EFFORT is made for reconstruction rather than reproduction. Wherever possible authentic buildings, such sis the old Centre Grove school house and the Palermo train station, are purchased and renovated, Mr. Richter

explained.

The general store is complete with pot bellied stove, a nickelodeon and penny candy The craft shops Include lamp workers; weavers, potters at work, and various glass

1962 THE COMPANY now charges $36.87 for 500 kilowatt-hours of electricity year-round. Using 750 kilowatt-hours would coat an electric customer $47.82 November through May, and $53.62 June through October. "Winter" rates for 1,500 kilowatthours are now $79.87, but the "Summer" rates raise the billVo $103.87. According to the company, the higher rate is changed because consumers use more energy during the summer months than they do at any other time of year. "THESE HIGH demands for electricity force the utility to install more equipment — generators, lines, transformers, etc. — to avoid brownouts and blackouts,'' a company

spokesman said.

"But the additional r msnt, which is not at full capacity much

of the year, raises the costs of producing and supplying electricity,” - the

spokesperson continued." Higher summer rates place

the burden of v these additional costs on customers who use more than a basic

amount of electirc energy.

The rates also act as an

incentive to conserve energy during the utility’s

most difficult months of

operation.

At approximately 6 p.mV August 1, 1979 Atlantic Electric, customers set a new all time record for electric demand of 1,192,600 kilowatts. The previous demand record had been 1,17?,408 kilowatts, set on July 21, 1978, the conipany reports.
