every year about this time of the fishing season: A whole bunch of anglers make up their minds that the drum have left the bay, and they stop fishing for them. Actually, the veteran drum fisherman knows that there are still some drum schools up the bay, and they keep fishing for J them. But the minute some boat owners see the big party boats leaving the bay and fishing the ocean, they ' figure the bay is nOgood, so they start fishing the ocean too. NOW. I DON’T blame those, fellows in the big party boats for wanting to be in a hurry to start fishing the ocean because the* big boats catch plenty of weakfish and blues in the bay, but it's awfully hard to ’ catch a drum on them However, Saturday night Bob Hertzog of Haddon Heights showed the people that there were still drum in the bay. He weighed in two humpbacks at Jim ^ Wallaces Tackle shop in ' Schellengers Landing in the 60 lb. class. Jerodi in ■ Rio Grandfe had two fellows weigh in drum going 64 lbs. and 644 lbs. from the Bay. The Bob Olivio of Bayview Marina brought in a card entry for Jay Klitsch of Havertown, Pa. for a 65 lb. drum at Bug Light. And Cpt. Paul Thompson on the Ogle got six drum on Sunday night at the FinTop, so you see there are still drum being caught. I’VE MADE several mentions of stripers in the Rips, but no one paid much attention to them because of the weakfish at Somer Shoal. Well, Jim Wallace knew what he was talking

about because last weekend he went down there'with Richard Andrus of Millville, and Richard got a 434 lb. and 414 lb. linesider while hi& wife Clare caught a 38 lb. striper, and Jim himself wound up with a 21 poun-
der.
ELLERY BOWMAN of Villas was one of the first to start trolling offshore and wound up with eight big slammer blues near FA Buoy. Now, on Monday, the northwest wind was so strong that most boats fished under the beach in the ocean at the target buoys off Cold Spring Inlet, and ail of the party boats and private boats bailed weakfish there. Cpt. Dave Foster on the Trophy Run out of Sea Isle was talking to Joe Rodia on the VHF and he was bailing big weakfishjmder the beach at Townsends Inlet. ON TUESDAY most of the party boats had to run farther offshore and to the south to find those big tiderunners, according to Cpt. Hi Thompson on the Big Jim II. On the same weekend that I talked to earlier in the column, Cpt. Dick Shepherd, who runs the Mary Beth out of the dock next to the Big Jim II,
told me that on Saturday he was up near the Ttiangle, way up in the bay, and caught some of the nicest eight to 10-lb. weakfish he's had all season. So thoseblfc weakies are in the bay too NOW ON TUESDAY night of last week, Cpt. Hi Thompson, his son Bill and I headed the Janie TV II out towards 14 ft. Light for a try at drum Jack Osborne and George Spalding were there, and Cpt. Tom Roberts of Villas was there in a 17 foot boat Action started fast when I hooked a 50 lb. sting ray. which we released at the boat. Cpt. TV>m was just landing a drum when we dropped our anchor, and later on in the evening he said he landed another one. Some fellow was on the CB saying that he had sft drum in the boat, so the action was, there. We didn't get anything but king crab after the sting ray, but there were some drum caught. ^ WEDNESDAY NIGHT the drum really started to take hold at the Pin-Top. Doug Bright was there on the Nada Jane, and Frank Glampa on the Blue Fin was there. Joe llalbruner was inshore fishing off Sun Ray Beach and didn't have
any hide, but he Mid there wm a consUnt stream of chatter announcing catches on the hot spot. THURSDAY NIGHT was another good night on drum at the Pin Top, Jack Osborne was telling me. He said one boat had five drum, but he was fishing from the mussel beds to SomerS-Shoal in the ocean for big weakfish Billy Mulligan was in telling me that Butch Lalng had a 118 lb. blur shark on Cpt. Jim lAummis's Fish 'n' Fool out in the canyon. They also saw a swordfish tailing, so that means that the night swordfishing trips will be starting soon
THE HANDICAP beach ramp at 44th St. Beach in Sea i«lr City, sard to be the first along the Jersey Coast, will be dedicated Sunday. Area businesspeople and contractors donated al! the time and materials.
