Cape Youth in Bolivia
For Missionary Work
ERMA — A Lower Cape May Regional High student is spending her summer in Bolivia as part of the mission work of the Southern Institute for Appropriate Technology. Elleh Plechner who turns 17 this month will enter her senior year at Lower Cape Regional in September She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Warren Garretson of Meadowview Rd. here and is an active member of the Tabernacle United Methodist Church where she serves as president of the Senior Youth Fellowship and as the Youth Member on the church administrative
board.
ELLEN M^DE THE decision to - spend three months in Sapecho, Bolivia after Ken and Sarah Corson, independent Methodist Missionaries, conducted a week of special services at Tabernacle Church. Margaret Van Artsdalen and Joy Hughes, also of this area, are accompanying Ellen and the 17-member missionary team. Under the leadership of Mrs. Corson, the group left this past week from Miami for the Bolivian village. Sepecho is located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in the Alto Beni
region
THE CORSON8 have been working for more than eight years in this area where they have helped build a Christian Church which now has over 300 members. One of the most important phases of their work is "Appropriate Technology” which involves using what the people have to work with to develop tools and other inventions to help improve their living standard. Nutritional deficiencies are a critical problem. Since rice and beans are the chief food source, a lack of protein has resulted in a high death rate. The Corsons have been working on a fish impoundment to raise this potential food source. * j ' SEVERAL OTHER innovations are currently in the trial stage; one is a brick-making process to help alleviate the housing
needs.
Ellen hopes to go into some phase of mission work and sees her trip as a
chance tp see if she la suited for it. She attributes the outreach programs of Tabernacle Church and their renewed missionary work as a big factor in her decision. She also credits her history teacher John Merrill whose class in American Ihdians and World Culture heightened her interest and greatly influenced her decision. "We take so much for granted in our lives today,” Ellen said before leaving "It is hard for us to realise that millions of people throughout the world have never been exposed to anything like our lifestyle. Simple things, such as vitamins or running water, are unheard of in many areas. I hope that in some; small way I can help in a work that will make Iheir lives better " Traffic Ulp Over 16% On Ferry N CAPE MAY - Traffic on the Cape May-Lewes Perrv increased by 2.489 vehicles 6.863 passenger?* Iasi month from May. a venrago.
