Variety In Summer Rec Offerings CAPE MAY - It's still possible to enroll in some exciting courses to be offered this summer, according to City Rec Director Bob Smeltzer. Heading the list of open classes are Nationally Certified Scuba Diving, American Red Cross Advanced Lifesaving, Karate, Jazz, Tap, Ballet. Acrobatics and Adult Learn to Swim. Peewee Basketball signups for the Outdoor Summer League will be taken at Cape May Convention Hall between 8:30 and 4:30 until June 27. For more information, call 884-8411 ext. 20 or 27. Home Run Derby Sun. AVALON - Tastykake will bring their Phillies Home Run Derby here, starting at 1 p.m. June 29. The contest is free for all boys and girls ages 8 to 15. Entry forms will be available at the field on the day of the contest. The Home Run Derby uses an automatic pitching machine to throw 10 pitches to each contestant, dotes Rec Director Dave Haberle. Points are scored for all fair ball hits, distance hits and home runs. Any ground ball within the base lines is one point. Distance hits are two points, and homeruns are five points. THE SPEED of pitch as well as the scoring system changes with each age
division.
Tastykake. will award^a total of 20 prizes in the local competition. First, Second and Third place winners in each category will receive engraved Phillies Plaques. Other prizes will be awarded by random drawing so that every boy or girl entering the contest is a potential winner. FIRST. SECOND and Third Place winners will represent Avalon in a regional final in late August. From the regions Is. winners advance to the Championship set for Veterans Stadium on Sept. 14. preceding the Phillies afternoon game. 'Hiere is a separate softball contest for..girls. The same machinrthrows a softball that is hittable every time. The same prizes go to the girls, who are also .eligible for the regional and finals.
