WedntwUy, Junt 2S, 1W> ~Previetc—I The Old House Tour EDITOR'S NOTE - Th# 32nd Annual Old Hodit Tour sponsored by tho Cape May County An League It 10 to 4 Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13. There will be 51 bulldlngt on thit year’t tour; here It a profile on tome of them: Home of Mr. a»d Mr*. Joseph Dean, MarehalMUe Rd., Tuckahoe. was built in 1830. Of native cedar, it features a 4-panel front doorway and 4 over 4 sash. The back of the property faces the Tuckahoe River, the county’s northern boundary line. Thomas Chew Marshall House, owned by Mrs. Harry Foigar, of Marshallvtlle Rd., like the Dean home is opened to the public for the first time this year. This 10room structure has two fireplaces and was built in 1818 by Randall Marshall, who established the nearby Marshallville Glass Works. Randall Marshall House, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gihorski of Marshallville Rd., is a fine example of the Dutch influence and features an exterior of brick laid in Flemish bond, unusual for the Jersey Cape. The Village of Marshallville was built around the glass works which was located behind this house. Opt. Belford Smith House, owned by Mrs. Ann Bergh of Marshallville Rd., is surrounded by stately old Norway spruce. Built in 1818, the home features louvered shutters and a double front door with fan. Second Cape May Baptist Church, Shore Rd , Palermo houses a congregation which celebrates its 210th anniversary this year. The stately white clapboard church has louvered shutters and a balcony around three sides of the auditorium. Home of Mr. and Mrs. John Enright of Shore Rd., Clermont, was built circa 1776 by a Corson and was carefully restored a few years ago so that modem conveniences haven't intruded upon an early country house atmosphere. Planked walls, wide cedar floorboards, steep winding staircases, and many ancient trees are of interest here. . .. Williams House, owned by Miss Alice Belapger of
WESLEY METHODIST Church la Petersburg was built la the mld-19th century; the tombstone in Its cemetery contain many oM county names.
Main St., Dennisville, is another first-timer for this * year's tour. In the process of restoration, this house of native timbers was built in the early 1700s and has two front doors. James Stites House, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lathers Jr. of Fidler Rd., Dennisville, originally had only two rooms; one up, one down. Exposed beams, original fireplace and native cedar siding are features. Restored in 1978, the 1847 structure is complemented by a new section constructed of old lumber from a nearby bam. South Dennis United Methodist Church (Pastor Robert Hughes) of Delsea Dr, South Dennis, was built in 1870 as a Baptist Church. Old wavy glass in original windows and wide floorboards are evident in this small country church situated among old trees. Wesley United Methodist Church (Pastor John Garrahan) on Petersburg Rd.. Petersburg, was built in 1853 and features the original pulpit. The congregation was founded in 1835, and the original small church structure is not part of a neighboring house.
Wetlands (From Page 34) agency which is generally considered more sensitive to environmental considerations than the Army engineers. In Justifying the amendment to H.R. 85, the House Committee claims that Civiletti's ruling creates an "intolerable'' administrative situation by confusing the responsibilities of EPA and the Corps under Section 404. HOWEVER. THE CORPS AND EPA have solved this problem themselves recently by signing a Memorandum of Understanding which limits EPA involvement in jurisdictional calls under Section 404 to a relatively «few special cases where there are legitimate technical disputes involving the designation of an area as wetland or non-wetland. Why are conservationists so concerned about the nation's wetlands? Aside from their beauty, these invaluable natural resources serve many vital ecological functions. They are indispensable breeding grounds and refuges for wildlife, including fish, waterfowl and mammals. They product plant life that is the source of much of the organic matter consumed by shellfish and other aquatic
THE ENDLESS CHEMICAL reactions '.hat occur in wetlands aid in the natural purification of water, neutralizing sewage and other contaminents, and "recharging" ground water resources. They also act as buffer zones, protecting landward areas against erosion, flood and .storm damage. Wetlands are absolutely essential to the nation's fish supply. Two-thirds of the fish caught commercially off the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, and one-half caught off the Pacific Coast spawn and feed in wetlands A STAKE IN THIS MOST recent wetlands controversy are more than 1.2 million acres of hardwood bottomland in the lower Mississippi Valley alone, the potholes of the northern prairie states, and the ephemeral streams of the arid West. Many of these areas wouldn't be covers* by the Corps' definition of the wetland. EPA,on the other hand, believes that these wetlands resources, as part of the life cycle of m*ny wildlife species, fall within the protective provisions of Section 404. Further Congressional weakening of Section 404, as contemplated by the House Committee, would be an ominous portent for the future of the nation's precious remaining wetlands.
