Fox explained, "makes it increasingly difficult for these people to live on the Social Security benefits and small pension* which they counted on for their later years.” A recent survey, he reported and disclosed that most senior citizens preferred self reliance to food stamps and other forms of government largesse "Senior citizens are not

looking for handouts." Fox contends "They want to contribute their talents toward a stable, healthy society, or at least be able to comfortably enjoy the retirement they worked so long for without burdening that society ."

Under the law the federal share of SSI checks increases automatically each vear if the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rises by 3 per

cent or more overspecified measuring periods The state share of the SSI check was also increased due to the higher cost of living. Under this provision the federal share was increased by M.Spercent. Brooks notes there are almost 84.000people in New Jersey receiving SSI
