especially for platelets, must be very large since a good tissue match occurs once in about 4,000 pepple " ACCORDING TO Joan Shatsian, Pheresis recruitment coordinator, a pint of whole blood contains enough red cells (about one cup) for a single transfusion but it contains less than an ounce of platelets (two tablespoons) and a very small portion of white cells (less than a

teaspoon).

A platelet transfusion for one patient requires platelets from 10donations. White cells are extremely difficult to extract from a

unit of blood.

••EVEN IF IT were possible to extract those cells routinely, dozens of donations would be needed to provide a single tran-. sfusion,” Ms. Shassian

said. In Pheresis, a single donor la used to obtain the white cells or platelets needed for a transfusion. ‘That fact,'' she continued. ‘ makes it possible to obtain a sufficient quantity of platelets and white cells, plus it lowers the risk of a patient’s reactioq or possible hepatitis transmission ” THE PHERESIS Center is at 23rd and Chestnut Sts. in Philadelphia and operates seven days a week. Individuals interested in becoming Pheresis donors should tell the nurse during their next blood donation, or they may call Ms. Shassian at

(215)299-4132.

Group and individual tours of the Pheresis Center (and the entire Penn-Jersey Center) are available to interested volunteers, school groups and prospective donors by calling the Public Education Office at
