the stability of state government. As presently constituted, the Comprehensive Master Plan for the Pinelands will devastate the County of Cape May, economically, socially, physically, and — yes r- environmentally. Just what it seeks >to prevent, it will surely bring
about!
SOUTHEASTERN New Jersey is experiencing the first throes of a major population expansion {Casino gaming is projected to increase the area population by almost one million over the next two decades. Proportionally for Cape May County, that is an increase of 10 percent or more, per year, for 20 years! Local planning and zoning must control the distribution of this growth or the above disaster will surely occur. If Pinelands density is restricted to 17 families per square mile — 39 acres per family — 100 percent of the population increase will be on the islands, on the farmland and on the waterfront, for that's all Upsala Graduates Two from Cape EAST ORANGE - Patricia O’Donnell of 123 W 26th St.. WASHINGTON - Congressman Bill Hughes has charged that the proposed Pinelands Management Plfcn represents "the greatest land grab ever contemplated in the history of New Jersey." Mr. Hughes has asked the Pinelands Planning Commisaion to go back to the drawing board and put together "a more responsible conservation program — one which provides for environmental protection along with orderly growth in South Jersey. IP THE Commisaion refuses to modify the existing proposal, Hughes said he intends to oppose it as strenuously as passible. "I had hoped that the Pinelands Comihission would recommend a conservation program that was fair and reasonable, and that was structured along the lines of the federal Pinelands legislation which I supported In Congress,”* Hughes stated, in a news relmise. "THAT LEGISI.ATION was built upon the principle of protecting the lands and waters of tiie Pinelands through public acquisition, and not by taking people's property through regulation The right to own. possess and enjoy property without unreasonable goverqment encroachment is central to our system of government. "Yet this plan just runs roughshod over the people of South Jersey, and destroys their property rights. It unsurpe the concept of home rule — a principle that has served our country well for more
