Investments Earn Big Money for Co.
COURT HOUSE — Investments of otherwise idle county funds earned $818,405 during 1979 and has already earned an additional $712,101 for the first six months of 1980, reports county treasurer
Philip Matalucci Jr.
In announcing the 1979 totals, Mr. Matalucci, said the total interest realned on county funds invested reached almost $2 9 million through December 31,1979 and with the amount earned so fai* in 1980, the figure is over $3 6 million. The interest earned will be well over $4 million by the end of I960, he emphasized. THE INVESTMENT program was started in 1973 under Matalucci's
direction.
"Prudent investment of county money not needed immediately to pay current bills provides an opportunity by placing this money in interest-bearing accounts to raise money
that doesn’t have to be assessed to the taxpayers,” the treasurer said noting one way county government save taxpayers
revenues.
ACCORDING TO Freeholder William Sturm Jr., director of Revenue and Finance for the county the efforts of the
treasurer’s office have resulted in Cape May taking a leadership position among the 21 counties in effective use of
idle county funds.
IN ANNOUNCING the $712,101 figure for the first six months of 1980 Matalucci said that with interest at its current

levels, investment of county money should produce well over $1 million in revenues for the
current year.
In 1978, receipts totalled $419,521, he pointed out indicating the revenue generating ability of high interest rate investments even on the short term.
