The Herald and The Lantern. iexc—IH The Old House Tour EDITOR S NOTE - Tht 32nd Annual Old House Tour, sponsored by the Cape May County Art League, Is 10 to d Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and, 13. There will be 49 buildings on this year’s tour; here Is a profile on some of them: Ctrl*' Friendly Home, Hughes Si., Cape May, Is another of the structures open for the first time on this year’s tour. Built in the late 1860s as the Baltimore Hotel, it was acquired by the Episcopal Church in 1896 as a summer home for orphans. It became the GFS Holiday House in 1911. Its two-story, columned porch is unmistakable. Inside is a beautiful chapel. Albert Henry Hughes Home, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Donald Kane of 800 Hughes St., Cape May, was built circa 1838 and it one of Cape Island's earliest homes of Federal style. It is said that Gen. Robert E. Lee summered in this beautifully kept home, which features, carved mantel, cooking fireplace with swinging crane, wide floorboards

NATHANIEL HOLMES Home of Mrs. Raymond Dixon Is on Main St., Dennlsvitle, and has been toured by thousands on Numerous tours.

and original window panes. Home of Mr. and Mr*. Robert Cunningham, 296 Windsor Ave., Cape May, has been in the Cunningham family since its construction circa 1880. Restored for contemporary living, the homes design is typical of the preponderance of small, frame Victorian houses that have earned Cape May it* international reputation as an architecture Landmark City; It is on the tour for the first time this year. John WUbraham House, owned by Charles McDonald Of 133 Myrtle Ave., Weat Cape May, is another first timer on the tour. Built by Judith Hughes, this high-ceilinged, stately home was later owned by Abigail Sheppard before it became the Wildbraham Home Mr. Wilhraham gave his Philadelphia home to Frankford Hospital, furnishing his shore residence with his Philadelphia furniture. As an expression of the hospital's gratitude, ,the board of trustees commissioned the elaborate chandelier gracing one of the elegant rooms. Mr. Wilbraham also donated the land for the park that bears his name across the street. Beadle Memorial Presbyterian Church, Cape Ave., Cape May Point, is a charming example of the Victorian Gothic style with its vaulted interior. The church is a memorial to the Rev. Elias Beadle, who died SOI years ago while serving as pastor of Second Presbyterian church in Philadelphia. Since this and the other four church structures on Sunday's tour are still in active use, the church will only be open to the tour between 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday. St. Peter's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. Ocean Ave. and Lake Dr., Cape May Point, is one of the most famous landmarks in this community and has been moved several times from the ravages of the sea. Located now across from the ocean front, the grey and white "Gingerbread Church” is celebrating its centennial anniversary as a church. Believed to have been built for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, it was reassembled here. In 1880 it was deeded to the Trustees of the Episcopal Diocea.se of New Jersey and has been home for summer services ever since. Note the interior yd low pine siding, added by the congregation when the edifice became a church. Again, as an active church, it will be on the tour only 1 to 4 Sunday. Home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ashton, 307 Lincoln Ave., Cape May Point, is an obvious departure from all the other buildings on this year's tour since this home was erected this year. Somewhat similar to'the octagon house of Victorian novelty, this home of round design provides for the greatest amount of room in an economical amount of space. It ia built on piling to bring it above the flood plane and to afford a view of the ocean for occupants, a feature seen in many contemporary homes along tbe Jersey Shore. This year is, of course, the first time this hojne has been on the tour.
