Graham Parker's release, "The Up Escalator" (Arista), should be the one to win over the masses. This record isn’t better than the ones that preceeded it, as all have been based on a mixture of RAB and rock and roll: No, the reason for its success will be the hard road work that Graham Parker has undertaken to win a sizeable cult following. HIS EMOTIONAL vocals and firey performances are a joy. Graham Parker is going to be around for a long time, making great musk and winning over more fans with each record. "The Up Escalator" is a good place to start. FOGHAT have one thing in common with Graham Parker, and, that is, they work extremely hard touring back and forth across the coimtry. Unfortunately, their new album, "Tight Shoes" (Bearsville), has the same all their records

lave, Weak material and music that works well in front of a crazed audience but falls flat on vinyl are what keeps Foghat from earning critical respect. But, I doubt Lonesome [Dove Peverett worries that he’s wasting his talents as ja vocalist and guitarist. 'AFTER ALL. that bank account would cloud anyone’s perspective. "Cruising” had to be the most controversial film of last year, but the soundtrack is pretty much standard rock. Things range from the wild punk sounds of The Germs to the soulful tunes of Willy DeVille. Not for everyone, hut Willy DeVille deserves to be heard. ANOTHER SOUNDTRACK. Roadie" (Warner

i Brothers), is a bit easier to digest. Featuring Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Asleep At The Wheel, Jerry Lee I Lewis, and Ray Orktaoa the 1 music is fairly consistent. Two big shocks are Pat Beak tar doing a fine version of The Young Rascals' "You Better Run" and Blondle churning out Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." * Can't comment on the film, but the music holds up nicely. "YOUNG GfRLS" (EMI America), is a strong debut by Los Angeles' The Scooters. The music is pure pop-rock, with catching melodies, fine harmonies, and a tight, driving rhythm. Several of these tracks would make fine singles and it seems likely The Scooters will be making 1 some noise very soon. Let’s hope so.
