Some really unusual things happen at this time of the fishing seasoh Bob Olivlo. manager of Bay view marina, was in Monday telling me that Jim Connally of Villas was drifting for flounder down in the Rips, and hooked and landed a 51 lb black drum using 12 lb test line and a minnow for bait Bob said that Jim had a 3/0 hook on, and it took him 55 minutes to land that big humpback

fish

rVK NEVER heard of drum taking a drifted bait before; and what's more I've never heard of them biting oh minnows ' The first day of the Cape May County Marlin Tournament was a ^)ig success as far as I could find out The boats did have to return to port because df

a squall that came up in the

afternoon.

I TALKED with Cpt. Scott at South Jersey Fishing & Hunting Center, and he Knew that 36 marlin had been released by members of the Cape Mjy Tuna and Marlin Club; and that the boat Kneides captained by the Kontr* brothers had six releases. Most of the catches were on the 30 Fathom Line, so those bill fish are in close

again this week.

On the second day of the tournament the boats got

out 25 miles, and had to come back; so that means that a lay day will be used, and the awards dinner and the fishing will wind up on

the same day.

I WAS TALKING to Helen Hewitt, in Lou Rodia's office, and she told me there were 30 boats competing in the tournament. This will make it hectic because the final results won't be in till sometime during the

awards dinner.

Well, the third day of the annual, event was a

to turn back

because of -yerj heavy THB-FINAL count on the ■ first day turned out to be 20 •white marlin with 18 released and two brought back to the dock. The winners were the Cape May Tuna and Martin Club with the White Ram releasing three bill fish and the Lucky Ducks getting two releases; the RAT also released two for the team. In second place was the Driftwood Anglers. The boat For Sail captained by Bill Darling, led the team and had some good fishing but didn't qualify: Ct. Bill released three whites after 3 o'clock so his entries

didn’t count.

THE HOT TUNA, with Walt Hendee aboard, had three releases, and the Emma non completed the team with one release. In third place was the Ocean City Marlin Club, and the only score on this team was the Nellie with two releases. She was captained by William

Jackson.

High individual angler for the tournament was a three-way tie between Craig Hurdt, John Montgomery, and Tom Burde with two releases each. EVEN THOUGH they only had one day, the codnty tournament boats had some real good fishing, and by all standards this should be a terrific season for marlin in the Canyon. Inside in the Ocean .pn Wednesday, Cpt. T&m Roberts on the My Gal found those big weakfish near McCries and one of the biggest days this season for his party. Cpt. Tom said he had two garbage cans and his fish box full with 70 big weakfish and two slammer

blues.

IDONIT GET a chance to do this often, so I'll take the opportunity: There is a newspaper on the outer banks of North Carolina named the Outer Banks Current, being published in. Manteo. There’s a tyrand new fishing columnist in the paper too. Cpt. Ernie Foster, of the Albatross fleet and Hatteras (who I’ve talked about several times) is writing an offshore column on the "Graveyard of the Atlantic," which is one of the best I’ve read. A veteran of 23 years of charter fishing, Cpt. Ernie tells it like it is. Noto: Cpt. Ernie’is the son of Cpt. Ernal Foster who helped me catch my first channel bass 26 years ago in Hatteras inlet. Barry’s Kicks Off Win CAPE MAY - Barry Clothes and the Merion Inn kicked off the Summer Junior Basketball League with a stirring contest won by Barry's 67-64. Bob Bonner and Sean Magee paced Barry’s with 23 and 18 points, respectively. Clause Wise put on quite a scoring exhibition as he canned 27 points for the Merion Inn. Barry's made it two in a row by thumping the Skins 56-41. Bonner dropped in 17 points. Magee fired in 12 and Pat Holden contributed 9 tallies to power Barry's. Stegers overpowered the Skins 72-60 as Jessie Johnson and John Stile lead the way combining for 17

points.
