Disability Benefits Lessened WILDWOOD - Important changes have been made in the way benefits are figured for workers who first qualify for Social Security disability payments for this and subsequent months, according to Del ton Brooks, local Social Security manager. The 1,936 people in Cape May County receiving disability insurance benefits before July aren't affected, he emphasized. A new law limits the total benefits payable to a disabled worker and his (fiber family, Brooks explained. Under-the old law, there were times when a disabled worker and his or her family received more in benefits than the worker received in take-home pay before becoming disabled. As a result, there was less incentive for the worker to return to work.
TENSE WITH anticipation, rresults prepare for their fight to extinguish a burning oil lank fire. An instructor stands by. ready to provide assisUnce.
Learning to Fight Fire with Skill
The new law limits total family benefits to the smaller of Hi times the worker's benefit or 85 per cent of his or her average monthly earning before becoming disabled. The limit has no effect on the worker's own benefit but affects the total paid to the family. More information about the ‘changes in the disability law can be obtained at the Wildwood Social Security office, 136 E. Spicer Ave., or by phoning the dtfice at 800-272-1111. NAACP Meeting COURT-lioUSE - Cape May County chapter president Dorothy Mack will report on the recent national convention in Miami during the monthly business meeting of the NAACP chapter, this evening (Wednesday at 8) in the public meting room of the County LWrary. The sessions is open to the public.
CAPE MAY - For recruits at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center here, the sixth week of training is an unusually demanding one. After seven days of cooking and cleaning, in the training center’s galley, getUng little sleep and carrying a heavy workload, the recruits are thrust back into the momentum of training with a crash course in fire-fighting. Classroom instruction covers the proper ways of extinguishing several kinds of fires — oil, combustible materials, electrical and chemical. THE DAMAGE Control instructors stress the importance of keeping a cool head In any. fiery situation. The inclination to panic, even in a controlled training situation, could lead to serious injury, it is stressed. At the outdoor Fire School, excitement runs high. The recruits now have classroom instruction behind them, and are

anxious for hands on experience. Sweating in the summer heat, they use PKP and carbon dioxide exv Unguishers to put out small, simulated electrical fihes. BUT THE REAL test of their fire-fighting knowhow is yet tocome. Divided into 12-member fire teams, they rpust face the task of extinguishing a huge tank fire. The need for the fire team members to work together is strongly emphasized, for the recruit that panics or tries to "goit alone" risks injuring himself and others. THROUGHOUT THE eight weeks of graining, a recruit is urged again and again to "be a member of the company," to learn to act as one with hi* or her fellow recruits.
