Ordinance
5ugges
VIlSB — The Lower Townsn(rPlanning Board has rdtrommended the township 1 governing body adopt an ordinance regulating windmills, setting a maximum noise
level of SOdeclbels.
While the recommended , local code would regulate noise level, it doesn't as recommended — take into consideration inaudible sound waves which, might affect neighboring
property owners.
THE BOARD'S recent action came in the wake of several requests by homeowners to erect wind generator forelec tricity. The 50 decibel level recommendation refers to the noise level as measured from the lot line. An auto creates 68 decibels of sound at a distance of 24 ft.; a bus passing within a distance of 38ft. produces 73 decibles. SOUND WAVES are only r.udible at certain frequencies; but beyond the hearing range, sound waves may set up waves which can manifest as rattling windows and other indirectly created noise. Township Committee has yet to act on the Planning Board's recommendation.
