Cottages ’ Past And Present Concierge Maureen LeStrange of Ocean View Lodge in Stone Harbor is a great gal! She majors in special education at the Univ. of Pennsylvania and officiates at track meets (such as the Penn Relays) for thelCAAAA. Maureen hails from Riverhead, L.I., and what intrigues me is that she loves to jog on the beach in January! Ocean View was known as the Herbert cottage when it was built in 1910 and later became Sunnyside; it got its present name when it was purchased by Alberta and John Platt in 1944. ALBERTA MANAGED THE BREAKERS on the boardkwalk for many years until it was demolished by the Hurricane of '44. Her son, Pete, tells me that the original architecture has been, preserved except that his parents added a fourth floor during the '50s. Imagine paying $5 per week for a single room and $7 for a double, and $500 for a season in a beachfront apartment with three bedrooms. ALBERTA DIED IN 1972 and the cottage changed hands. It is now owned by the Shoemaker family, and James Prevost is its manager. Pete Platt and his wife, Jane, maintain a summer home on Weber Court. „ Chateau, next to Ocean View, is contemporary, and was first known as the Juergens cottage; later it was named Chateau Conrelis, as that was Mrs. Juergens' given name. SHE MAINTAINED A VERY ELEGANT establishment, catering strictly to widowed ladies and gentlemen. The gals had glamorous getups, wearing hats and gloves for dining, and everyone would sit on the porch waiting for the dinner bell to ring. For many years folks who stayed at the Ocean View would stroll over to Chateau for nourishment. This is the fifth summer for present owners, Mary and Tony Greifzu. They had vacationed in Avalon since they were children and the idea of possessing such a lovely guest house inspired them to take the step, although they had never before managed this kind of establishment. THEY HAVE 15 LOVEtY ROOMS for guests, and live there themselves the year round. This cottage also has retained its original exterior lines, although much interior remodeling has taken place through the years. I find these "cottages" fascinating because they have retained many of the old beautiful stained glass windows, the graceful staircases, and memorabilia of a bygone era. COURT HOUSE - Cape May County students who receive college chargeback checks from the County Treasurer’s Office no longer need to personally visit that office to file
- application forms.
Freeholders JaduBittner and William Stum have evolved a procedure which will allow forms to be
processed by mail.
THE NEW PROCEDURE will save students time and expense by eliminating the need to travel to Cape May Court House from all parts of the county to file the necessary forms. At the same time, freeholder Bittner added, the new procedure will allow the treasurer’s office to process chargeback
paperwork faster.
The county handles about $250,000 a year in chargebacks for some 1,600 applications for students who attend community colleges outside the county since the county has no college of its own. County residents who attend twoyear college are reimbursed part of their tuition. BITTNER NOTED the student must be a yearro"nd permanent resident ol the county to qualify.
