AVALON — While Mayor Ellsworth Arms cost and the weekend municipal crew put the finishing touches on beach cleaning, about 120 other individuals, ages 9 to 48, were gathering under the 31st St. Pier for the Five Mile Beach Run last Saturday morning. Many began loosening up and trial runs. One was overheard saying, "I’ve been on liquids since yesterday morning.’’ 'Hie enthusiasm of the runners was contagious. At 9 am., Mayor Armacost fired the starting gun and the runners were off. Exactly 27 minutes and 44 seconds later, the trim and fit Frank Goldcamp of Avalon crossed the finish line to the cbiers of the spectators who had gathered to support their favorites.
The course was from 3lst to 80th St. and bock again. Rec. Dept, staff members were stationed at 10-block intervals and remained in walkie-talkie contact throughout the race. The Rescue Squad stood b>. Winners in the three categories included 17 and Under 1. Bruce Miller (29:44) minutes, 2. Mike Brunner. 3. Dave GoMcamp. 18 To 35 Frank Goldcamp (27:44, Rick Markeley. Norbert Vondra. . .34 and Over 1. David Vandusen, 2 James Duffy, Dick Allebach. . .The race was open to men and women, and some of the females thought a category for women should have been available, and that will be considered for next year. • The first women to cross
