Wednesday, July 30,1968 County says ‘No’ Roll-Over Curbs

VILLAS — It sounds like ‘'eaiHrter curbs” may never come about as a possible way of alleviating the motor vehicle-' pedestrian problem along BayshoreRd. Previous reports indicated county authorities weren’t too receptive to local businessman Melvin Steeb’s idea of having the rounded-type curbs installed instead of standard curbing. Steel’s thought was that this way, sidewalks could be installed but motoring customers would still be able to pull up front of businesses. IT WAS A couple of weeks ago that Mr. Steele accompanied Mayor Tom Clydesdale to Court House for a meeting with county officiate on a requested engineering study for the county roadway. When Steele mentioned the roll-over curbs, he was, the mayor recounted, July 28, ‘’flatly told ’No.’ They want a regular, square curb." Mr. Clydesdale continued that both the county planner and county engineer believe roll-over curbs aren't suitable as a

way of alleviating the traffic safety problem on Bays ho re Rd. . and that they "told him so in no uncertain terms.” MR. STEELE, who is abo president of tfie Lower Township Taxpayers Assn., first came before the township governing body with the proposal following the death of a Villas woman last April. She was struck by a vehicle while she walked along Bayshore Rd. to a bingo game. THE SUBJECT of curbing was broached at the July 28 Committee meeting by a resident who stated he didn’t think parking should be allowed in front of any business because of the danger presented by vehicles having to back out onto the highway. It was abo mentioned from the audience that there is an ordinance on the books which requires the installation of sidewalks and curbs • a measure which, it was said, isn’t being - but should be enforced by the township construction official. The mayor said he would look into it.
