Cpt. Bob Schumann, who operates the Sea Star out of Cape Island's West basin, said on his radio program the other morning that big slammer blues were biting on deep riding lures out near McCries Shoal, and that there were big weakfish under them. He also said flounder up to five lbs were being taken iih side McCries, and in the Rips Later on in his news bulletin, he mentioned that some night time anglers are taking up to 2,000 lbs. of weakfish under lights in the bay. s ~7 HE MADE AN Additional remark which I think is proper for this season. He said this is the best year he’s had in the six or seven years he's been fishing parties. Bob llertzog and I were talking about this as Bob was telling me that Cpt. Frank Cassedy on the Lady Grace had taken 80 big blues and e lot of big

weakfish near FFB last Wednesday. It was Bob’s opinion and mine that this is the best year for weather and catches that we can remember. JOE HALBRUNER stopped me in the new Rose-Ann restaurant in the Villas to tell me that he and Joe Hoop, on Joe’s boat the Wow, caught 60 big tide runners near 3FB (the green blinker off Stone Harbor). I also learned that Cpt. Tom Roberts on the My Gal produced 120 flatties out front of the Christian Admiral for his party. RALPH KNISEIX in his column- in Angler’s News was talking of catches tiderunner weakfish from Buoy 19on^p to Miah Maul Shoal iri^-the Bay, and Jack Douglass told me Sunday that he had gone out just off Peirces Point and caught 80 nice weakfish for a morning’s fishing. This was further verified by Isabelle Hawkey as she told me that Cpt. Mark Elliott on the Gone Flshin* had done real well on weakies all week at Bug Light. MY COLUMN didn’t get in last week because of a space problem — but then I was talking about the terrific canyon fishing, and . the Stone Harbor Yacht Club tournament from information supphed by my old friend Sam Albrecht who operates Kennedy 's in Stone Harbor. Sam knew that the Glass Machine out of Cape May went to Wilmington Canyon one day and got five for five on white marlin and then went to Baltimore the next day and got two more whites which I think won the tournament. Dave Nicholsmi of Stone Harbor Yacht Corp., also had reported that Tom Tozour, 13, (don't mistake this one for his dad who is also a bill fisherman) caught a 101 lb. swordfish on the Force Seven captained by Harvey Wilson on the same trip Cpt. Harvey got two nice dolphins — a 52 lb. bull, and a 25 lb. lady dolphin. DAVE ALSO told me that there was a 210 lb. yellowfin tuna taken that will set a state record in the women’s division, but he didn’t have the boat or the angler's name to get back to Sam Albrecht. He also informed me that Jeff McSherry of Stone Harbor caught his very tirst .marlin in the yacht club-tournament and he's having it mounted. FINALLY, I HAD one «ew item that I saved till last. On Ttuffsday night a week ago down at the Golden Eagle, Loo Rodia and his pubtyc affairs group and Freeholder Director Anthony Calanoao sprang a surprise retirement dinner for Helen Hewitt, who has handled most of the Cape May County Marlin Tournaments for as long as I can remember along with Enid Rodia. Ben Callaway of Philadelphia Daily News, who calls himself a "commercial fisherman. expounded on, Helen's capabilities. We are all going to miss you Helen, but maybe next year you'll come back long enough to keep us straight on this annual event.

CAPE MAY- Big flatties’ have been prevalent this season, but one of the biggest flounders was hooked into recently by Jay Steinmetz of this community. Aboard his own boat, Mr.

Steinmetz caught a 14 lb. 6 oz. flounder, which he weighed in at Jim’s Tackle at Schellenger Landing.
