by JacmnttO O'May Old Cottages Hold Stories Sandcastle, at 103rd and First Ave. in Stone Harbor, is one of the cottages of 1910 vintage. Charles Clark built it on ground he acquired from the Risley Brothers' South Jersey Realty Company. His wife Amanda and their son Ellsworth shared the cottage with him, and it was the only . house below 96th Streeet at that time. Amanda was one of the very early Stone Harbor summer residents, as she sojourned at the Harbor Inn before marrying Charles. He came from Philadelphia in his youth with Tom Cash, and called our town home every summer during his lifetime. THE COTTAGE WAS SOLD BY the Clark family in 1944 and ovffr the years various occupants have made changes until its conversion to apartments. Mrs. MacVaugh is the present owner. Lucille Springer, who married Ellsworth Gark, relates ■ some interesting stories about the cottage: one’s relating to its 48 pairs of curtains: During World War II all of the shore properties had to put up black drapes so that’ cruising U-boats couldn't see the lights. One night a drape came loose and fluttered in the breeze, and tlje shore patrol didn’t lose any time coming by to find out who was signalling! WHEN LUCILLE AND ELLSWORTH were maitied 53 years ago, he built a house at 10230 on the same parcel of land owned by the Garks. Ludille taught school in Stone v Harbor from 1926to1928,when Miss McCormick and Mr. Naeming were in charge, and she helped compile the "History of Stone Harbor" during that time. , George Springer, Lucille's father, was employed bV SJRC when they held land auctions under a huge tent on the corner where Shelter Haven Motel now stands. Later, when the bungalow colony ran into financial trouble and was taken over by the Risleys, Mr. Springer had charge of the rentals. THESE BASIC BUNGALOWS also changed hands many times over the years so that each one became an individualistic dwelling reflecting the needs and wishes of its owner. There are probably only one or two in the entire colony that still retain the original architecture. Someone has said, "The more things change, the more they remain the same." That's definiJefy not true of Stifle Harbor cottages. Crime Funds

"The increase in our county’s year-round population together with the influx of summer residents has resulted in a rapidly rising crime rate for both violent and nonviolent crimes,” the prosecutor pointed out. HE SAID that during the last three years, breaking and entering and larceny has accounted for more than 90 per cent of the county’s serious crimes. (Lower Township police recently broke a case involving a rash of 13 burglaries in which some $20,000 in money, jewels, and guns had been taken). This statistic, he explained, reflects the fact that during the wipter, there are many vacant buildings, both residential apd commercial. "THESE properties are susceptible to criminal activity because they are .not in use during a large Tax Appeals - (From Page 1) municipalities have no appeals: Avalon, Stone Harbor, West Wildwood. THE PLACE TO BE during continuous sweltering weather is by the seaside — and that's exactly where thousands of people have been of late on the Jersey Shore. This is last weekend in Cfepe May. Fall Fishing ?

(From Page 1)

The surf and jetty fishing picks up. Small boat fishing just outside the inlets improve^. Delaware Bay fishing repiains good until we get severe storms. Because many fishermen tend to shy away from fishing in fall, "party boats are less crowded. Boat ramp, traffic drops. There is a much more relaxed atmosphere in the postseason seashore period. BLUEFISH action gets better. £ish school up and come to the surface and frequently can btf caught

by anglers casting plugs and surface lures. They concentrate around the inlets and can be caught from the beach. Weakfish also school up and can be jigged with bucktails and metal lures and also can be caught in the inland waters and Delaware Bay. Tuna> albacore, bonito, and other migratory fjsh remain well into the fall, and marlin have^ been caught as late as October. FALL FLUKE fishing also gets better with a lot more of those nice fat doormat fluke coming to

hook.

There will be sea bass, and even some porgies, as well as tautog on the wrecks. Later, cod and pollock will arrive in local

waters.

Until the waters chill off, there will be the usual run of exotic fish also making their way back to their semi tropical haunts. Jetty fishing will produce weakfish, blues.spotted weakfish and striped bass, as mullet pocket around these stone groins, and the game fish move in to feed.

Lou Rodlo, on avid fisherman, is asst, director of Public Affairs
