THE LANDING - The Lower Township municipal governing body has caited upon the township Municipal Utilities Authority to repair leaking 'water lines ^in the Sohellenger Landing section of the township The request came in the wake of a Superior Court ruling last week prohibiting the City of Cape May from shutting off water to consumers here
and in West Cape May.
IN ITS request to tW MIJA. the township said the cost of repairing the lines should be billed to the City of Cape May until the court makes a final ruling on who is responsible for main-
taining the old lines.
Mayor Thomas
Clydesdale said Monday the court is "going to render a decision as to whose responsibility it ia." IN 1118 directive last Wednesday, Superior Court Judge James O’Neill told the city it would be endangering the health of the residents here who depend upon the city for their
water supply.
The judge's ruling came after the state Board of Public Utilities had precluded the city from shutting off water until the matter of jurisdiction can
be determined.
MAYOR CLYDESDALE also revealed -that the township had received a letter from Capr May City Manager Fred Coldren suggesting that municipal
officials from the affected communities alt down to discuss the longstanding
issue.
Cape May's position has long been that it merely sella water to customers outside the city limits; that is has no responsibility for maintaing any lines other than the main (ripe which it installed decades ago. The laterals, many of which were installed by private individuals here and in West Cape May, are either the responsibility of the individual or the municipality in which they are situated, the city contends. BOTH IX)WER Township and West Cape May officials hold a different view: Whoever gets paid
for the water should pay for the repairs to the lines. Mayor Clydesdale also reiterated this week that he is certain the city wants to get out of having to supply water to Schellengers Landing. The mayor is adamant that before that happens and the respon sibility becomes that of either the township or township MUA - that the
lines be repaired.

ERMA- The Cape May County Airport has been awarded a quarter-million dollar federal grant • for acquisition and clearing of land in connection with the extension of a primary runway, according to Freeholder Director An-
thony T. Catanoso.
"This is the next step in our carefully planned expansion and improvement of airport facilities," freeholder Director Anthony Catanoso said in announcing the awarding of the grant. "Many airports across the country are being told 'There is no money available*, so we feel ex-
tremely fori unate."
The entire project was put in motion by a 1976 freeholder resolution enacting a 20-year Airport Master Plan. Other parts of the three-year sub-master plan encompassing this grant are related ex-
tension of runway 19 onto some of the newly-acquired land, resurfacing two runways, and relocation of Fulling Mill Rd. around the extended runway. Application for grant monies for the additional
work will now be filed with theFAA. The $260,780 offer from the Federal Aviation Administration provided funding for the acquisition of over 40 acres of land •
Record Interest In Upper TUCKAHC$E—Upper Town- funds from bank to bank.
■hip Treasurer Charles Pcssagno has reported that interest on idle funds in the township for the six-month period ending June 30 is 50 percent higher than the same period last year. Interest realized to date this year is in excess of $264,000, while in 1979 for the same period, interest totalled $176,000, according
to Pessagno.
EARNINGS ARE accumulated through investment of idle funds or monies appropiated but as yet unused, in short-term certificates of deposit. By constantly moving the
whichever has the highest rale of interest, the township accumulates interest until the funds are needed," he noted "These are not all surplus funds being invested, but mostly idle funds not expended, ’ the treasurer emphasized. MAYOR Leonard Migiiaccio and committeeman Daniel Beyel and Frank Kruk praised Pessagno on his investment record, noting that since he assumed the treasurer's position in 1977, over $1 million has been
earned in interest.
