Chamber $eeking To Retire Mortgage
COURT HOUSE - The Board of Directors of the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce would love to .have a mortgage burning ceremony as part of the annual meeting in early October; only trouble is, there’s still some $7,000 owed on the mortgage. In an effort to overcome that troublesome matter, a group of directors, all former Chamber presidents, has appealed to their felk>w members for contributions of at least $25 to pay off the debt once and
for all.
CALLING IT A "small investment for big returns,” the former K exles pointed out in a ter of solicitation last week that in its eight-year existence, the Chamber of Commerce Office and Information Center has been of assistance to over a half-million visitors to the Jersey Cape. Located just off the. southbound lane at Crest \Haven Rd., the Chamber building attracted the attention of thousands of informationseeking vacationers and tourists this summer. More than 9,600 visitors came through its doors in July ialone, nearly triple the
number for that month last
year.
"THE INTEREST saved by paying off our mortgage early will help us to have a few mote dollars to spend on maintenance and needed improvements to the building and grounds," the former Chamber presidents wrote. The $80,000-plus office and information center was opened eight years ago in May, one year after the building program was initiated. Since then $48,000 of the $55,000 mortgage has been paid off. According to the former presidents, all but the $7,000 of the $65,000 encumbrance was paid off by some 150 of the Chambers’ 550 members. WHILE THE indication is that it would be nice if the other 73 percent of the members were to come forward during this special appeal, the Chamber letter nevertheless is aimed at all members. Each is being asked to contribute $25 or more to the Building Fund to help retire the mortgage this Sept. 15 Contributions may be made to: Cape May County, Chamber of Commerce Building Fund. POB 74.
