The artist chooses the viewpoint from which to perceive the imAge. Developing an eye for a picture is part of the learning process which must be nurtured continually by drawing as well as seeing When one is painting landscapes, one is struck immediately by the contours of the land which held the structure of the pain ting within their folds Though these contours have a particular form, they would appear different from a bird’s eye view or from that of an ant. WHEN VIEWING a landscape, there is even a difference between standing and sitting. While fixing the horizon on the picture plane, one notices that the placement of that line aG&ve or below center marks the attitude of the viewer. Likewise, when the artist contrives a still life, the viewpoint of the perceiver is moved around as well. For example, by lifting the bowl of fruit onto a box, we move it up and away from the perspective of the table top and closer to the level of our eyes. As the bowl is raised, the curve of its edge ^flattened and at eye level would appear as a straight line. IF THE VARIOUS elements of . the composition are to fit into place, there must be a

consistency within the drawing in order for the illusion of space and form to be "readable." When working with a complex form such as a figure, it is easy to be so caught up in proportions and the varieties of outline that the image appears stiff, flat and unable vto operate in space. Obviously, the artist must be familiar with the overall structure and its individual parts before manipulating her viewpoint. Only then can the lines be selected or created to clarify the image and set it in its proper perspective.

THE ACCOMPANYING illustrations present one step of the thinking process of creating the illusion of a figure in space, and the final refinement (so far). Eye level has been set at dead center of the banjo. Figure A. shows a simplified grid describing the expansion of this point, above and below. In figure B. the grid is not obvious, but is nevertheless present within the form as lines are marked down to describe gesture and detail.
