This is a hard year to a striper in the rips either

write about fishing because some of the terms are changing. Lou Dupuy of the Villas was in telling me of catching 30 spike weakfish off Coxe Hall Creek slough on Wednesday, but when he showed me the sire by measuring with his hands, I said. “Lou, that looks like a IMt to two lb. weakie. I don't call that a spike.” "Well. Boyd.” he replied, “you know we’re spoiled

now.”

1 (JUESS MAYBE that's right. Ten years ago I had a 1 3 4 lb. weakfish mounted because that was a nice size weakfish in those days. It's still a nice weakfish in my opinion. The' big species this past week has been marlin, according to Cpt. Scott at Sojjth Jersey Fishing and Hunting Center. Cpt. Dick Weber, on the Bonito had . one for four on whites Tuesday a week while Cpt. Scott Smith on the Aquilla had six for 18, and the boat I wrote about according to information Bill Kleb gave me the Miss EEnie took time off from swordfishing and raised 30 white marlin and caught J2 of those bill fish. That was Monday. On Tuesday he had five more

whites.

CPT. SCOTT also said there were a lot of big blues on the East Lumps, and that Cpt. Bill Garrison had a 7Mi lb. bonito there. Some Bonito have been showing, but this was an exceptionally big one that Cpt. Bill got. Chris at Jim's Bait & Tackle in Cape May confirmed the story on marlin saying that Monday was the hottest day of the year so far. A lot of the action has been taking place south of Baltimore Canyon almost to the Poor Mans" spot, and some action has taken place further north in Washington Canyon. Labor Day weekend will have seen a lot of canyon boats heading towards those deepwater grounds if the weather holds because there seems to be a lot more canyon-type fish available now than they were earlier. I HEARD A conversation between Cpt. Dick? Weber and Cpt. Jim Lummis on the Fishing Fool, and I believe he said he was bringing in a swordfish (this was last Wednesday night) Cpt. Jim also reported he had weighed in a large big eye tuna at Carlson's in Wildwood (they unload some there at Otten’s Harbor). Tb get back to Chris at pirn’s bait 4 tackle, he told me there was some good weakfish action up the bay arouhd Bug Light. I already knew this because Isabelle Hawkey had told me Monday night that Cpt. Mark Elliott on Gone Fishing had gotten 52 one day and 101 the next day with Larry Severance Isabelle said theae were two and three lb. weakfish they caught in the deep water oyster stakes north of Bug Light and you can't call that size spikes. FLOUNDER ACTION sort of went on the decline this week, but I look for those flatties to show up around Somers Shoal and the anchorage in the bay. It’s not too early to catch

because the jetty jockeys have been hitting nice ’ weakfish regularly, and stripers like this kind of water too. John Fisher of North ' Cape May says he is scoring regularly off Poverty Beach on weak-

fish.

ON THIS COMING weekend our own Cape May County Hatteras Anglers will be hosting their fifth annual surf fishing tournament over on the Avalon beach with the Avalon Chamber of Commerce. Eleven teams have signed up so far and more are expected. John Fisher and Bill Halbruner of Villas are co-chairmen and they’ll be working with Ed Wright of Avalon C. of C. Jack's place is headquarters. Last year was the best tournament the club has had with 16 teams taking 72 fish and this year should be better as surf fishing comes into its. own after

The Atlantic

City Mermaids won last year’s contest, and they’ll be back this year to defend

their UUe.

ONE LAST-minute news item: Cpt. Jim Ckchitti was telling me that the Starlight had three very successful night chumming ’ trips this week. One night produced 200 big blues, the next night got 125 slammers, and the third night in a row Cpt. Dave hit 150 large blues. This was on the East Lump, but Cpt. Jim looks for those big fellows to move to Five Fathom Bank. He’s planning an all day trip on Labor Day and he already has four fellows fishing on the' night trip just to keep their positions on the stern of the Starlight. I found out one of Cpt. Jim’s secrets for catchingfish: He gets all his bait — small bunkers, minnows, etc., from Randy taudeman, and this fresh bait sure does make a

difference.
