$how of Appreciation

Somewhere in the equation that determines a successful summer for business people is the Chamber of Commerce factor. The Weather. Gasolihe. Advertising. Business Acumen. All are parts of the formula But don't forget the Chamber. . ( Remember how\ the Cape May County Cfiamber of Commerce' came to the fore during lust season's Gasoline Crisis with the Hotline and other assistance? Nobody wants to recall those times, especially in light of this season with its wall-to-wall throngs and jingling cash registers Of course, the County Chamber of Commerce has been of service this season too. Through its Information Center just off the Garden State Pkwy. in Court House, thousands of visitors and vacationers have been helped this summer las have similar tourists for the past seven summers of the building's existence. The Chamber would like to retire the J7,000 remaining on the building's $55,000 mortgage. By paying off the mortgage early, the wouldbe interest monies can be used for needed maintenance and improvements — to help make the property a continual asset for qll business people and a benefit for even more than the half-million tourists it has served already. Some members of the Chamber Board of Directors have asked each Chamber member to contribute to the cause. We would carry that solicitation one step further and urge every merchant, member or not, to drop a check in the mail today to: Cape May County ChamBer of Commerce Building Fund, FOB 74, CMCH, NJ 08210. ✓ I —

Money Matters 3 Steps to Survival

by Vlncr Fulginiti A Financial Plan la a way of giving yourself control over the use of your money. Three-step analysis of your own financial situation provides the information you need to use more effectively the money you now have. It’s not a get-rich-quick N scheme or an attempt to make you fit into someone elses money management ideas, but a way of exposing effective management principles that you may be able to adapt to y6t»n own situation. / Step I-Where Am I?. The most important thing that businesses and corporation do that individuals fail to do is to identify what they are really worth. This is done by listing the current value of everything you own and comparing it with what you owe. If the second number is greater than the first, you may have already discovered that gray area between debt and potential bankruptcy. If not, this figure will serve as your starting point and basis for measuring progress. WITHOUT THIS information, further planning is useless. On a sheet of paper draw a line down the center. List yobr Assets (what you own) — money in checking account, savings accounts, certificates of deposit, stocks, bonds, real estate, cars, boats, antiques, jewelry, etc. The right hand column lists your Liabilities (what you owe) — loans (bank, credit union, life insurance), bills due, taxes, mortgage, etc. This list of assets minus your liabilities equals your personal net worth. Bring this up to date at least annually. NOW THAT you have figured out what you are worth, next find out where the mopey is coming from

and where it is going and why. * Another two-column sheet will give you an income and expense plan. List on the left all sources of income — wages, commissions, interest, dividends, rental income, etc In the right hand column list all expense v categories, including fixed expenses — insurance, house payments/rent, utilities, taxes, loan payments, etc. — and flexible expenses — food, clothing, entertainment, medical/dental, church, education, etc. THIS .NORMALLY will cover a one-year period for accuracy although it can be done monthly. If you don’t already record these items, a simple home budget book is available at most stationery stores. If you have trouble with either the statement of personal net worth or the income and expense plan, send a stamp-addressed envelope to: Vincent Fulginiti, c/o The Herald P.O.B. O, Avalon, N.J. 08202 and I’ll send you sample worksheets to assist you in getting started. ••• Now that we have completed step one of our three-step Financial Analysis, we use this information to determine which way we are headed. The key question is: “Is this where you want your money to go?” If you say ‘•Yes," continue your present spending and investment plans. If you are not satisfied, watch this column next week when we start to set financial goals and plan spending to achieve those goals. Remember that most people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan. Vince Fulginiti, a Wildwood resident. Is an account executive with a leading investment broker.

Besides Erosion^ \ What’s in Store For South Cape? by Roth Fisher There has been ever so much talk about what’s happened to Cape May and South of there. The {U.S. Army] Corps [of Engineers) has had a grand hearing and it was clear that their plan won't be activated before three years, if then. So\what are you going to do? In three years much more of Cape may will be gone and Cape May Point may once again be Cape Island. Those engineers have been paid thousands for years for the same old stuff. Time to get some action. Start the by-pass of sand by 1981! If some of the sand from north of the (Cold Spring I Inlet must be moved, best not to keep it a secret from Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Diamond Beach. If there ' is to be a quarrel over the plan, best to start now and get on with it. (The Mayor of Wildwood was even unaware of the hearing in Cape May on May 19, 1980.) Are we really going to trade off Cape May for Diamond Beach? One of the reasons given for giving no protection to the South Cape may Meadows was that it could not be economically justified until the area became pkrt of the Cape May Point State Park. If this is the case,-why has there been no pressure to make it a part of the Park at once. How much would purchase cost? and how swiftly could it be accomplished? What are you mayors up to these days? Put away the fiddles.

Ruth Fisher heads the Citizens Assn, for Protection of the Environment. Her thoughts here were addressed to officials of the County. Lower-Cape Mays, and County Beach Erosion Committee.
