& Coming Home Going To School Can be Dangerous
There are two period^f time in a child’s day they are exposed to greater dangers than they have ever known before — going and coming from achool. Each year some 50,000 elementary school children are injured between school and home; more than half of these casualties are pedestrians. The N.J. State Safety Council suggests that parents check the safest route to school and making sure the child follows it, determining the safer side of each street, inspecting the troublesome intersections and noting alley entrances, railroad crossings and crossing guards at pedestrian crossings. The purpose of the various safeguards should be carefully explained to children and they should be advised to do at traffic lights and sign signals Children should be taught to obey the red, yellow and green lights and should know which face of the stop-and-go light they should obey. TWE SAFEtY CtAincil said (he selection of the safest route for children should go much further Parents should keep an eye open for empty or deserted ' buildings that might prove a temptation to youngsters, a penned or chained dog near the street, a utility's job in progress or a construction site that might be attractive to a youngster
Children should be provided with emergnecy change that they can use to call home if there’s trouble of any kind on the way to school or coming home. They should be instructed on how to enter a phone, booth, lift the receiver from the hook and dial their home numer or the operator. TEACHING CHILDREN that every single motorist camwtt always be relied upon to take Safety seriously, and that the youngster who follows the rules must also be on the lookout for the driver, is a gdoa*«idea, says the Safety Council. For children who ride to and from school each day in a bus, the Safety Council notes the most dangerous moment of each trip occurs when the bus is loading and unloading and children are crossing streets and highways. SEE THAT children leave in plenty of time to meet the bus without having to hurry Advise children to respect the bus driver as a friend and to follow their instructions but not to distract the driver with unnecessary conversation or \Vith loud talk and boisterous behavior. Finally, the Safety Council cautions children never to tamper with • emergency doors on a bus apd never to put head, elbows or arms out of the window
Fox—Housing Crippled
By Regulations
COURT HOUSE - “Federal over-regulation of the homebuilding industry has made the traditional dream of owning a home an impossible dream,” according to Beech Fox. Republican challenger to Bill Hughes in the Second Congressional District. "The nation is in the midst of its worst housing crisis in years.” Fox maintains, "and crippling federdfy rcgulatioas imposed by the Democratic administration and Congress are as much to blame as the tight money market." FOX IS critical of the
Carter proposal to impose a 10 percent, withholding tax on independenB contractors. “The fact that the percentage of aggregate taxes paid by the independent contractor* is among the highest of any wageearning group refutes the Carter charge of negligence by building contractors in payment of withholding taxes." Fox contends HE ADDED that “one more piece of bureaucratic red tape is the last thing needed from the tax-happy Democratic President an<f Congress."
