I wrote a column laat year on the new captains out of Cape May, and how they would be showing us some real fishing in the I9W) .season Well, they've certainly shown us, as predicted Cpt. David Roseman helped his brother Cpt. Donald Roseman catch a t9fl lb swordfish on the sanie trip they released two white marlin, caught a large big eye tuna, and also
a large yellowftn tuna. Later on in the month Cpt. Donald teamed up with Bill Bright. Dm Murphy, and Joey Roseman for two more white*, an M lb. swordfish for Bill, and a nice wahoo Capt. Dave was running the Neptune out for scallop* at that time. Cpt. Joey Roseman started chartering on the Satan lady and came In with a nice catch of good

sized yellow-fina, the second trip produced three white marlin, and on his third run, with ail systems performing poorly he managed a catch of seven tuna in the Cape May Marlin and Tuna club's tournament last weekend. In this particular contest it took a combination of the old and the new as Capt. Bill Lewis teamed up with Donald Roseman as mate and walked away with the prizes with a 310 lb. blue marlin and a 284 lb. big-eye tuna on the Lady Cheryl. They also had a couple of white marlin releases in this best yet tournament that saw 40 boats competing and catching and releasing 70 white marlin, another 282 lb. blue marlin, plus an additional large blg-eye tuna. ANOTHER NEW skipper last year was Cpt. Bob Schuman on the Sea Star. He’s been on the radio daily reporting the whole season's catches, and bringing unusually big loads of fish back for his parties at Cape Island West Basin, and I don’t want to forget Cpt. Steve Rea on the Blvo who’s been loading up on blues regularly, released some white marlin, and had an outstanding success all season. The older skippers have been doing their share too, and I don't want to take anything away from them, but I believe that they deserve praise for the job they're doing, Now on to the local scene FLOUNDER HAVE been taking over on the Ocean side. Cpt. Tom
Roberts on the My Gal had 150 one day, and 125 flatties the next fishing Somers shoals with his parties. David “Jerry’ Jerabek and I located Cpt. Tom down there on Sunday, and came back with 28 real nice flounder in the 2 to 3 lb. class on the Janie T.VII. On Labor day I went back there with Frank Okie wski, the fishing barber •of the Villas, and found Joe Roop on the Wow there. Joe did all right, but we had a slower pick, and wound up with 15 nice flatties. Cpt. Charlie Selby on the Rainbow was talking about flounder in his weekly letter, and he’s had some terrific fishing in this location too. ON TUESDAY big weakfish showed on top at Somers shoal as they emptied out of the Bay, and a lot of those big fellows were taken on bucktaiis. I had a chance to talk t6 Cpt. Frank Cassedy about the fishing on the Lady Grace. He’s had real good catches of 5 lb. blues out Northeast of Five Fathom light tower for his parties. Capt. Frank figures those big stammers will be working down again from the North on their fall migration southward and that blue fishing will get hot again this month. After 56 years of fishing for them, Andy Heaington finally got a striper! He was fishing with famed guide * "Stu” Tlnney at Percy Preist Lake in Nashville, Tenn. It was a 1216 lb. trophy, which they caught their own bait to use. Andy caught the linesider drifting, and we

hope to have a picture soon. OUR LAST ITEM is a sad one. Horace Layre, of Layre's Dutch Kitchen passed away on Wednesday morning - He was one of my oldest friends in the Villas, and a legend in his own time. I know that anyone who knew him will agree with me that he had a heart as big as his body. For 31 years I celebrated Mother’s Day a^, the Dutch Kitchen with my mother, and my friend Horace was

there.
His passing will leave a void in the lives of all who knew him, because he was one of a kind. Sometimes he fished, but most of hi* life was spent on perfecting meals of seafood that had no equal. I enjoyed all the years I knew him as a friend, and I don’t believe anyone could quite take his
place.
Farewell old buddy! May you rest in peace. My life was better becausegf^vjp.
