Tigers Eye Winning Ways
LOWER CAPE MAY will also field a varsity soccer team this year for the first time, and new coach David
Smith is very optimistic. "Though this is our first season, we are not that inexperienced,” says Smith.
by David Welaberg ERMA - With the 19W fall sports season fast approaching. athletic teams of Lower Cape May Regional High School are highly optimistic about their chances for a winning season One of the coaches who is quite confident is fifth-year football mentor Bill (.arrison, and with good reason WITH THE choice of three experienced quar terbacks and a variety of
running backs to handle the ground attack, the Tigers stand a good chance of improving upon last year’s less than enviable 4-9
Stalwart of the offensive line is All-South Jersey selection Joe DIGilio. Though the line was hurt by graduation, opening the holes with DiGilio will be a group of seniors, all with considerable experience. • THE STRONG point of bur team this season will be oui* defense,” says

Garrison. Eight starters return from last year's team, including defensive tackle DiGilio, and linebacker Will Streaker. "With almost our entire defensive unit returning, I feel we will be very competitive,” asserts Garrison; who hopes to challenge St. Joseph’s, Middle Township, and Hammonton for the league
title.
• • • ALSO LOOKING forward to a successful campaign, is the Lower Cape cross-country team, headed by coach Jim Ridgeway. Replacing the leading runner John Halbruner, from last year's 4-8 squad, is senior Australian standout Steve Puller. Providing strong support, are seniorsBrianFInnerty. also a transfer, and Mark McPhearaon. Sophomore Tom Baxter also has a chance fora big season. "Tom has made remarkable progress from last season. If he continues to improve, he could be one of our top three runners," says Ridgeway. Sophs Mark Chinnis, and

ACCORDING TO field hockey coach Merce Bauman, the 1980 team will be hard pressed to match the success of last year’s squad, which qualified for the state tournament. "This is kind of a rebuilding year for us.” notes Bauman. "St. Joseph's, Hammonton, and Ocean City, have always dominated, but the rest of the league is closing the gap. It is a very tough
conference."
The f-eturn of seniors Barbie Bakely, Rose McCarthy and Joyce Conies, should help the squad provide some sur-
prises this season.

WHILE THEY lost their top two seeds, Mary Donaldson and Barbara Kelly, to graduation, the 1980 girl's tennis team should help new head coach Lionel Desroalers improve upon last year’s disappointing 3-11 season. Leading the Tiger attack wiU be seniors Valerie . i Cullen, Elizabeth Kelly. 1 Janet Williams and Jane Endrekin.
